Title: Birthday Traditions
Post by: E-A-G-L-E! on July 04, 2007, 09:38:18 PM
A friend of mine had a birthday not too long ago.  Every year he bikes at least as many miles as he is old.  So I was wondering if any of you have some such tradition for your birthday?

Stroh is up to 38 ounces from the beer bong I think.

As long as I don't have to cook on my birthday, I am happy! ;D

That's a cool idea.  I need to start doing something like that.  My last few birthdays have just flown by and it would be cool to have a tradition like that where I could reflect on each passing year.

Oh yeah, definitely something easier than biking.  Maybe something like playing 35 holes next year or eating 35 chicken wings or 35 hotdogs.

I like 36 better... it's a nice round number:

36 holes of golf
A slab and a half of beer
3 dozen oysters....

Hmm, the age thing doesn't translate to golf holes very well.  It would be tough to walk off a course and skip the last hole on my 35th birthday (next year).

Eating 35 oysters sounds good, though.  Or maybe buy a $35 bottle of wine, cook up a nice steak to accompany it, and write a letter to my son for him to open on his 35th birthday (to be followed by one each year). (no kids for me yet, but an amusing, sappy idea that came to mind   ;D)

Haven't ever given any thought to an idea like that but can't grant you it won't involve riding a bike 40+ miles on the next one. ;D

I thought it was a cool idea, too.  I've been finding it difficult, though, to find activities that translate well every year - especially for a winter birthday.

I don't do anything in particular each birthday (other than eat birthday cake -- that's a requirement!).   I have ideas, though:

Charity related (may be too goody-goody for you):
- $1 (or $10 if you can spare it) per year sent to your favorite charity
- # of pounds or cans of food donated to your local soup kitchen

Knowledge-related:
- # of digits of pi to memorize

Fun-related:
- # of bars to cruise by that day
- # of pieces of candy, sq inches of cake to eat, etc

But, instead of doing something bigger/more each year, what about doing something different each year?
- Eat/Drink something you haven't tried before
- Try a new restaurant
- I think E-A-G-L-E crochets, right - learn a new stitch or lace pattern each year
- Try a new recipe each year (and since it's your birthday, no one gets to complain if it's bad!)

Which reminds me, my birthday's coming up.  If I wanted to eat something that I hadn't tried before (and I wanted something that tastes good), anybody have any suggestions?  (Did anyone get to the bottom of this post??  :))
