Title: The Boss Sucks
Post by: Uisce Beatha on April 24, 2009, 07:58:16 PM
His version of Blinded by the Light is on XM Radio so I'm thinkin'...

Great song.  Genius writing.  Delivery sucks.

So how many of his songs would have been twice as good if someone else had sung them?  Besides all of them.

LOL

Good thread.  I like Glory Days.  Not sure who else could have done it.  One step up and two steps back is one of my fav.s [sm_anon]

Other than that I totally hate Bruce.  Seriously. Totally.  Swear.

Interesting topic:

Patti, punk icon that she is, is no great shakes in the delivery department, but she has been KILLING this song for 30plus years now.

Similar phenomenon:

Ever heard Willie Nelson actually perform 'Crazy'?  [sm_disgust]

Blinded by the Light is one of those songs that's better known by its cover than the original obscure version. I don't think such covers are necessarily "better". They've just been made into a more "pop" version that's more palatable to the masses. Manfred Mann popularized Do Wah Diddy Diddy in the exact same way. If the cover version is the first version you've ever heard and liked, the original version will be the one that seems like the cover, and you'll tend to like it far less.

Having said that, there are a few artists who are great songwriters but not necessarily known for their vocal abilities who make this phenomenon more likely to occur. Springsteen is certainly one such artist, but Bob Dylan is the prime example:

Dylan is a great example.  He even trumps your assertion that the first version you hear is the one you favor.   [sm_disgust]

While we're on the subject, does anyone else think GnR's Knocking on Heaven's Door and Live and Let Die both totally rule?   [sm_headbang]

Yes. Live and Let Die was meant to be played that way.
