Title: Strong Opinions/Emotions Re: the NE Patriots
Post by: Clive on December 10, 2007, 12:57:17 PM
I've read more than one person say he hates the Patriots.  It seems like everyone either rubs himself while dreaming of them or loathes them.  Why is that?

I've heard folks say they hate the Steelers, mostly because of the media play they get (a phenomenon I call Tiger Woods Syndrome) or that they seem to have a strong fan base everywhere.  Is that it for the Patriots as well, or is there something more?

The only team in the NFL I truly loathe is the Cowboys. I don't hate the Pats, but I have a tendency to root against "dynasty" teams, and they generally fall under this category for me these days.

to me it's the result of the synergism  of the emetic fanboyism that permeates bahstin sports culture and the 'luck' the league officials (on and off the field) have afforded them throughout the 'run' of the last few years

I agree with spacey on the "dynasty" teams. And I don't know what it is but I just don't like Belichick. Seems like a real arrogant prick, more so than most NFL coaches. So I won't mind seeing them get beat this year.

But I don't hate the Pats. In fact, I respect the way the front office has been able to build and manage the team under the cap.

But it really comes down to Belichick.  He's an arrogant prick and his smug attitude seems to be contagious.  He topped it this year by appearing offended he was called out for cheating.  The cheating is one thing; the complete (perceived??) lack of remorse is something else.  I wouldn't let him in my house nor near my children.

funny enough, cheating incident swept under the rug aside,   he is what i like most* about the pats.  he is arrogant, and he blatantly gives the big  FU  to the league and the media.   stick it to the man!

It's not that hard to figure out. A quick top 10:

10. Jealousy
9. Overexposure
8. Commentators unable to talk of them without touching their privates.
7. The cheating thing
6. All the Patriots fans who didn't seem to exist during the rest of the franchise's history are now here to rub it in our faces.
5. The success of the Red Sox as well. I actually rooted for them to break the "curse" and now I have to hear about it nonstop. (My company is owned by a Boston management company). I'd like to see a nuclear holocaust occur at Fenway (assuming one just HAS to happen somewhere).
4. Randy Moss seems like a real *bunghole*.
3. Tom Brady and his wayward sperms, he seems like a real *bunghole*.
2. Rodney Harrison seems like a real *bunghole*.
1. Bill Belichick seems like a real *bunghole*.
1a. When you're on top everyone guns for you. It's human nature, especially when you are a real *bunghole*.

I just have a bad taste in my mouth for bahstin fans from the 04 Series when the Sox beat the Cards.  They were arrogant and beligerent.  Individually I've gotten along with Boston fans, but you get a few of them together - step back, its an exercise in aggression.

I don't 'hate' the Pats, but would not cry if they lost (may even laugh a little).

The Patriots exist.  I'm sick of hearing about and seeing them on the highlights.  My team is teh sukk this year, and probably next as well.

I will watch something else if the Patriots are the only game on the tube.  Even paint drying.

When I was growing up, I wanted to be Warren Coolidge from The White Shadow.

Now that I'm older, I want to be Tom Brady.

It could happen.

I'll have to humbly disagree with you on this Uisce.  Who isn't passionate about their team?  Outside of a couple boisterous idiots that could learn a thing or two about class and humility (this applies to fans of other teams as well) I've seen more uncalled for hating of the Pats then I have seen the arrogant attitude depicted of the Pats fans.  How much of this hate is media driven?

It's possible I'm projecting one particular Pats fan across the entire base.   [sm_devil]

LOL.  I do stand by it though.  I think there's a strange mixture of arrogance and insecurity in that team's fans.  "We're the best and you MUST acknowledge it or I'll cry."

I talked to my Uncle from South Boston last month and we spoke more or less about the same thing, in particular the Red Sox.  He said everyone in Mass. is saying there has never been a better time to be a sports fan in Boston.  He somewhat hates it, as it brings the bandwagon, chest thumping fans out of the closet and it makes it harder to get tickets at the gahden.

Success breeds *bunghole*s plain and simple, and it isn't limited to just Boston and New York.

And yet another team people either love or hate. Don't hear about much because they had been sukking for the past several years. This year they are overshadowed by NE.

I think it's the "gunnin' for #1" thing. Beyond that I agree with stroh, just because of the liver thing.

Agreed.  I don't hate, or dislike the Cowboys.  When I grew up in Jacksonville, we didn't have a team.  The closest was Miami  [sm_disgust]  And then the upstart TB Buc.s, are you *fudge*in' kidding me?  McKay?  0 - 13?
(In retrospect those original uniforms, and logo kick ass)

I had 3 options.  The Steelers.  Hard to argue.  Bradshaw.  4 superbowls.  The Cowboys  Staubach.  Tony Dorsett.   Or, since I had family in Minnesota......the 4 time superbowl appearing Queens.

Tough call, but the reason for the post...I got tired(albeit the cheerleaders made it interesting) of hearing how I should love the Cowboys.  They were cool and all that, but.........Went Purple, and never looked back.  Moved to MN in '80.  Bleed Purple and Gold since around '75.  I have to admit, though there was a time when the Eagles did hold a certain charm..   Jaworski.  Carmichael.  Montgomery.  Those were the days.

Well, the "original" dynasty -- the Green Bay Packers -- won only two Super Bowls, albeit by a combined 44 points.  And that was good enough for Lombardi to get a trophy named after him.  (And come on, it doesn't even look like him.  Hello?  Lombardi wore glasses!)

Thereafter:
  • Dolphins: two in a row, by a combined 28.
  • Steelers: four in six years, by a combined 30.
  • Redskins: two in six years, by a combined 42.  But one was against Denver -- I'm just sayin'.
  • Niners: three in seven years, by a combined 72.  But again, one was against Denver.
  • Cowboys: three in four years, by a combined 62.  But two were against Buffalo.
  • Patriots: three in four years, by a combined 3 9.

OK, I'm convinced: the Patriots suck.  :D

I grew up in Buffalo and was a big fan of the Bills. Still am just not as die hard. Moved to Dallas in '92. So here I am a big Bills fan the first year the Cowboys played the Bills in the SB living in Dallas. Sucked to be me. The second year? By then 3 previous losses didn't deaden the pain. I grew to be a fan of the 'boys.

Being a Bills fan anyone in the AFC east was hated. Didn't like the Steelers that much also, a bit of a rivalry there too, not so much anymore.

As far as the Pat's, I have grown to not hate any team, except the Raiders, can't stand Al Davis. Anyway I would still like to see the Pat's loose a game.

The early morning ramblings of someone who knows nothing and says even less.

Growing up on the left coast, I never had that deep rooted hated of any sports franchise, something I dearly would love to have, our sports teams are relative babies comparatively speaking.

Having said that I would love to see the Pats run the table, I'm tired of hearing about only one undefeated NFL team blah, blah, blah Dolphins yada, yada, yada pop the champagne when a current undefeated team loses.
