For those of you that do the outdoor lights or Christmas tree thing, when do they usually go up?

Our house lights went up yesterday. [sm_anon]  Multicolored bigass old-school bulb type.

I've modified my role to: "stay the *fudge* out of the way, and keep my mouth shut."

It's been a pretty workable arrangement.

We don't do outdoor lights. I can't be trusted on ladders.

Growing up we always did the tree on Christmas Eve. The entire day was spent decorating the tree, making cookies, etc. Presents were opened that night, we slept in late on Christmas, had family breakfast or brunch, and spent the rest of Christmas relaxing/reading/breaking toys.

Since I've been married, those traditions have yielded somewhat to include some of hers. Now we decorate when the time feels right. Given that we haven't had a single proper snowstorm yet, it doesn't quite feel right yet. Might be a Christmas Eve tree this year.

Georgia told me she wanted to put them up a week before Christmas.

I've got to drive to Cairns to do some Christmas shopping next week, and I am not looking forward to it.  I've become a bit of a country-hick when it comes to driving in all the traffic etc, I hate it.  [sm_disgust] [sm_disgust]

Yesterday the girls helped me put lights on 3 spruce trees and one lilac bush in front of our house. Two with white lights and two with multi-colored.

In the past I've done simple white lights on the house. I thought the trees looked nice so we're not doing the house as it tends to get pretty busy looking.

I should add that we did the outside lights yesterday as the temperature was in the 40's. Inside stuff - not until December and hopefully snow on the ground.

Watching that movie is the only tradition my wife and I have so far.


Haven't put up Christmas lights yet.  We probably will next year for Van.  We don't own a Christmas tree yet either.  No sense in putting one up this year as the little dude would just tear it down most likely.  We should be starting all the 'traditions' next year with the tree and such.  I'll probably put up some basic white lights.

A couple of related stories: 

My wife grew up in Chickasha http://www.chickashafestivaloflight.com/ which is famous for this spectacle.  We'll be taking Van this year to see it. 

A guy that works for my company almost died Tuesday putting up Christmas lights.  He fell from 20+ feet and was in a coma for a few hours.  He is doing ok now considering and should pull through but it sure makes you think. 

We do a wreath and whatnot outside, but we don't go so far as lights, animated deer, etc.

Getting the tree this week, since I'll be gone this weekend and we don't usually wait 'til mid-December.  It'll get decorated within 2-3 days after it's installed in the base (which occurs a couple days after we (I) bring it home, make a fresh cut, and let it drink sweet nectar in our garage).  The Spawn thinks Santa brings the tree as well as the presents.  (Santa needs to make two trips, apparently.)

Watch Christmas vacation every year.
Karen goes all out on the inside of the house.  Our place is Christmas Town.  She does a good job, looks very nice, that's why she has to start before Thanksgiving.


I don't put up *feces* outside (well, except for a nativity scene we have) No lights, never have.

Typically, we put out our Nativity scene mid-December.  This year, though, we put it out yesterday.
