...Greg Ryan is out as the U.S. women's soccer coach. The decision came less than a month after his top-ranked team lost in the World Cup semifinals following a contentious goalie switch.

...

Ryan was 45-1-9 since taking over in early 2005, but Gulati made clear that the lone loss weighed heavily in the decision because it meant Ryan failed to win his only major tournament.

:o :o :o

You could see this one coming as pretty much everybody was very perplexed by the whole "GoalieGate" thing.  Still, changing managers right in the middle of the two year World Cup / Olympics cycle can't be a good thing.  I'm a firm believer in four year cycles for international managers but of course it needs to be the right four years.

Ah well, *fudge* 'im.   ;)

Man the dude made one mistake...right? One loss in two years, primarily based on a gut decision, seems a bit harsh.

I doubt this is entirely true - had the US lost with Solo in goal, he'd still have his job.  Its the manner in which he lost that cost him the job.  A stupid move without a doubt, but it appeared to me that we were going to lose that game regardless.

But hey - if he's going to make stupid moves like that - he deserves to go.

Not sure we would have lost anyway, but agree it was the way he lost it and how he is failing to manage the team conflicts that really cost him his job..tough to survivie a cluster like that turned out to be.

I wonder when the women's program will start getting the level of coaching it deserves. Of course, the same could be said about the men's program I suppose, but the women have been sadly under-coached since Anson...

Yeah liking Morrissey shows more signs of effeminacy than getting a Janet Jackson reference real or imagined IMO.
