Title: Fake Wedding Cakes
Post by: dystopia on June 11, 2007, 12:50:13 PM
Maybe I've got weddings on the brain from spending the entire weekend on wedding activities, but this story intrigues me.  I've never heard of fake wedding cakes before.  Pretty clever, actually.   I hate most cakes, so the wedding cake would be one of the first expenses I would look to cut corners on if I were planning a wedding.

Business Offers Chance To Rent Fake Wedding Cakes

Quote
That's right — a new business allows couples to rent decorated plastic foam wedding cakes for less than half the cost of the same cake made from scratch.

"They're covered in exactly what a real cake would be covered in — fondant and gum paste,'' said Kimberly Aya, owner of Fun Cakes. "The only difference is the inside. Nobody can tell.''
....
....
Aya has a secret spot on the cake reserved for one real slice of cake for the bride and groom. It is slipped into place, at the base layer and under the fondant sugar paste frosting.

"So they can cut that at the ceremony and feed each other wedding cake,'' she said.

And normally, the cake then is wheeled to the kitchen to have it cut and served. So guests don't need to know the rest of the cake was fake.

So the mutual pledges of eternal love won't be the only sham?  Cool.

I'm actually surprised it's that cheap.  Decorating the cake has to be really labor-intensive and easily more than half the total time spent making one.

"If I knew you were coming, I'd have faked a cake"

All the decorating is done by cardboard cutout people.

Fake wedding cake :'(  Besides, they don't even look real.  "Nobody can tell"?  They look as rigid as can be, too stiff, and without the form and lines that a cake should have.

A nice cake would be one of the few things I think I would actually insist upon having.  But I suppose that cake decorating is rather special to me.  My grandmother is quite a phenomenal artist in the area of cake decorating, and she taught my mom much of her skills.  In turn, they've taught me.  I haven't done much of it since junior high, though I did help with my high school grad cake.  (That was a lot of fun, too.  My grandma, my mom, and me working on it together - :) )

Yeah, but their cakes are real.   :P

I'm guessing they keep the price down due to re-use of fake cakes.  Eeeeewww!

Actually, the fake wedding cakes can be rented; once finished with them, the supplier takes them back and reuses them if they are still in super shape. The top tier with the bride & groom on it can be a real cake the wedded couple can take home and freeze for their 1st anniversary while the rest of the cake is made of decorated styrene. The wedding guests are given pieces of sheet cake decorated in the same style as the wedding cake or can even be given small personnal-sized wedding cakes the size of large cupcakes if the bride and groom want to splurge.

Welcome Ward.   [sm_beertoast]

Thanks for the info.  We have a wedding to attend later this month.  I can only hope I don't get drunk enough at the reception to take a bite out of the fake cake.

The Moonwalk, however, is a given.

Wouldn't the guests notice when they don't serve cake from the one on display?

Seems tacky to me.  I know my wife was very particular about our wedding cake(s).

I like it.

Seems like a small but significant step back in the direction of the old, more sane days, when a guy would walk out from his wedding carrying a fresh piece of ass over one shoulder, and a nice, fat goat under his other arm.

I've been to some big weddings where the wedding cake was no where near big enough for the people there.  I'm guessing when they took the cake to the back to cut it up, they supplemented it with some sheet cakes.  No one seemed to pay much attention (maybe everyone was too blitzed by then)

Same here.  I've also seen couples choose one flavor for the for-show cake, and a different flavor for the behind-the-scenes sheet cake(s).   Much cheaper for the couple, and a bonus for the guests, in that they get to choose which type of cake they want.

(I'm still against reusing fake food.  That's gross.   [sm_disgust])

Somehow, some way, it all just clicked for me.  The world now makes sense.
