Title: [SPOILERS] Olympic figure skating
Post by: gleek on February 25, 2010, 09:18:00 PM
Just watched this Canadian chick skate. She must have fallen on her ass at least 3 times and stumbled at least one other time. Has the quality of skating gone downhill or are they just trying jumps that are simply too difficult to pull off?

Back when Katarina Witt and Kristi Yamaguchi were winning gold medals, I don't remember there being so many egregious errors.

I saw that too.  It was kind of uncomfortable to watch.  I got the impression that she wasn't near the top of the leaderboard.  I rarely watch figure skating, so I just assumed she was really having a bad night.

I dunno if I could find fault in this.  It probably is EXACTLY like pulling back the putter with a few hundred bucks on the line, or staring down a personal best, or when we're doing really well in one of our crappy local club tournaments and trying to finish out on 18.  Except it must be about a trillion times more pressure to perform at the marquee Olympic event because it is only a once-in-a-lifetime moment yet something you've worked on 7 days a week, year after year after year.  Or something like that.
