Laura (mrs s.) wants to take a trip to Oregon this spring. I've only been through Portland once, and that was only for about an hour, on the way to Seattle, so i'm not really familiar with Oregon. IIRC, you lived there for a while. If we were to plan on flying into Portland (probably only spend a day there) and then spending a couple of days in Eugene (have friends there), what else would you recommend to fill a week?

Of particular interest would be quaint vineyards, B&Bs, and the like. Any info is appreciated.

Anyone else familiar with the area is also welcome to chime in. TIA.

IIRC, most of the vineyards are up around Portland.  Me, I'd head to the coast, but that's only because I like it.  :)  You can find B&Bs along the coast, the scenery should be a wonderful change from Idaho, fresh seafood abounds, the roads are fun to drive, ...  Now I miss it.  :crying:

We've stayed in Yachats a few times before.  It's a bastion of liberality -- lots of Subaru Foresters, if you get my meaning.  But you might have to drive a little for a meal, whch sucks.

Going the other direction: Bend, Sisters and Redmond are pretty cool, too.  High desert, technically.  Nice golf courses, if you play golf.  More built up, so there is a wealth of resstaurants, and probably classier B&Bs to be found.

I think we're planning on spending at least a couple/three days on the coast. Golf is probably out of the question because Laura hates the entire institution. (Unless there's a really good day trip she could take without me, accompanied by our friend, while I golfed with her hubby).

Fresh seafood always rules.

Oddly, the typical coastal restaurant has very fresh seafood but does not present you with haute cuisine.  Not that it bites, but don't expect 5-star dining.

Depending on your driving desires, anything from Florence (south) to Astoria (north) is nice.  (I'd mention Bandon, but there's not a whole lot to do there, and you'd be drawn to Bandon Dunes and away from marital harmony.)  My wife thinks Cannon Beach/Gearhart is a good first-Oregon-coast visit spot: B&Bs, shops, restaurants, decent "beach" to walk on.  It'll probably be too cold/windy for swimmming, unless you're hardy.  (Which reminds me: can't speak for Cannon Beach, but Yachats permits dogs off-leash on the beach.  Considering how much Monte looks like a dog, you'd be hassled less if you had him running around down there.  Also more dog-friendly places to stay farther south.)

I live in the extreme south. So far south, in fact, that I live in Utah. Bountiful to be precise. But my wife is from Rupert (Burley area).

Stalker envy.  How sad.   ;D

I stand by my comment that the Oregon Coast is a wonderful change of scenery from Idaho.

Northern Idaho is quite pretty. The federal gov't did Idaho's image quite a disservice by building the Interstate through the ugliest parts of the state. Then again, I suppose that's what keeps the pretty parts pretty.

As for stegerman, that  :asshat: hasn't posted here in forever. You can tell us apart by the fact that stegerman is taller and likes to post in psychobabble. On the other hand, my ass does most of my talking. It's a subtle difference, I realize.

And if you head to the coast, stop by a nice little golf course in Gearhart which IIRC is the oldest golf course on the west coast.

2003-2004  was a great year in pinot noirs from the willamette valley.

archery summit  is probably the best high quality at a non-elite price point .

a quick google search seems (maybe not deep enough) their best 'scores' were from 2000-2002.

the website looks like a very scenic stop though.

the geography seems a little 'south' of where the best pinot crops were supposed to be....

that said, as long as it's not a big bottle corporation (like kendall jackson, yellowtail, etc)... touring any vineyard is likely to be fun, pleasant, and they wouldn't be in business if they didn't have at least a few good selections... they'll be out for tasting
