Title: Q 4 Mac humans
Post by: Blader on December 25, 2009, 08:42:36 PM
I just got Ms Blader a Macbook for xmas.  Should I tell her to install the mac equivalent of semantic's antivirus software?  Price is not an issue.

I use a mac and don't have any anti-virus software installed.

Wife uses a Mac Pro for past two years.  I use her old G5 Tower that was purchased in 12/03.  Neither machine has any virus protection program.

I got a free anti-virus thing from the Mac website.  Works pretty good.  Never finds anything.  Surprising with the amount of pr0n I look at.

there are mac viruses and exploits out there, but I can't imagine with up to date browser, script disabling, OS updates, and even-remotely intelligent web/email habits that it would be an issue, especially if you have a NAT router in front of it.

of course, rootkits would probably be your biggest concern really, just don't give her admin/su powers

I don't really give a *fudge*.  She's my daughter, almost all grown up.  She won't be around much longer.    She wanted it, I bought it for her.  She can do what she wants with it.

Thanks for the AV advice.  From my intergoogling, I suspected it wasn't necessary but its hard to trust strangers on the intergoogles anymore.
