Title: Had a bit of a scare yesterday
Post by: Spanky on February 08, 2007, 05:08:39 AM
Didn't post it last night as I was still calming down from it.

My wife called me from her work and said to come get her, she was having pain in her chest and it was getting worse. I left work and took her to the doctor. Luckily everything is all right. Still don't know the cause of the pain but the heart is ok. We are thinking maybe and anxiety attack.

Wow. Scary.  Glad, so far, so good.

Did they rule out P.E.(Pulmonary Embolus)?  Blot clot in the artery to the lungs?

Make sure.

Someone on FGI(Mack? not sure.)  Bad situation.  Almost died

Keep an eye on her.  I've been in medicine 18 years, and I've seen/heard more problems from people ignoring symptoms.

Good luck.

They did an EKG and it was normal. This morning she seems to be pain free. She did not have any injuries or changes to anything. When she was lying down it seemed to be better. We'll just see how the day plays out. They did give her a pain killer. Hard to tell what it could be in a 33 year old woman.

Recent baby?  Birth control pills?  Smoker?

All 3 are major contributors in women of that age group developing DVT, which is the leading cause of PE.

No, no, and no. She says her rib cage feels heavy today but it does not hurt.

Hmmm.  Medical mystery for sure.  I just conferred with a colleague, Dr. House.  He specializes in these types of mysteries.

We'll need to run a full blood panel, cultures, CBC, chem. 7, lites, type and cross, check LFTs, enzymes.  EKG has been done, so we can skip that. Chest x-ray, Ct chest, Brain MRI, cardiac adenosine stress test, echo cardiogram, carotid arterial dopler ultrasound and lung perfusion study.

This will take some time, we'll get back to you if anything turns up.

Are you also a 33 y/o female on birth control, who smokes?

I may need to run some tests.

when i had this (26 y/o male, non smoker, asthmatic,no prior history of heart issue, no family history of heart issues other than one paternal gradmother in extreme old age with congestive h.f.)  they  determined it was due to dehydration induced pulse irrythmia , a complication of extreme dehydration from the flu.  it set us back many thousand $.    hopefully this isn't the case for you (sounds like it isnt)

I'm a 32 y/o male whose wife just stopped taking birth control and has been known to smoke on the golf course or at a bar or party when the wife isn't looking.

So today is a better day. The pain is not there, just a "heavy" feeling. We have been out and about today. We still are not sure what the problem was but whatever it was seems to have passed.

Of course we are still waiting on the barrage of tests Dr. House and nurse stroh have ordered.

Hope everything is ok.

My wife rang me the other week from work too complaining about stomach pains.

So went and picked her up and took her to the obstertrician.

Seems it was some muscle pain relating to the stretching of the ligaments that hold the uterus in place.  Appearantly very common when woman are about 20 weeks pregnant... ;D

As a 38 y.o. male (N/S), I guess I don't have to worry too much about about PE or DVT. However, my BP has been known to be slightly high. Should I bother getting an EKG, or should I just get my LDL and HDL checked? Of course, a CBC, CT, and MRI sound like fun too. OTOH, paying for all that could be quite damaging to my FDIC-backed bank account at BofA. Instead, I'll just read messages about SSAD in the P&R forum at FGI on my PC, NTTAWWT. Or better yet, I'll see if I can get a BJ from SWMBO. Oh. Is it too late for an NSFW warning? FWIW, I was j/k anyway. So n/m what I just wrote.

if no previous history of chest pain, i would say possible panic attack. did she feel dizzy? short of breath?

if she has had previous chest pain, possible mitral valve prolapse?

DISCLAIMER:
i am not a doctor. but i play one on internet forums. ;)
