Title: Is this a good deal?
Post by: Guesswho on January 29, 2007, 05:55:28 AM
Looking to upgrade a little. Usually build my own computers, but this looks too good to pass up. What do you think? Thanks. Dan

Looks pretty decent to me for the price, but what do I know?

Have you googled for reviews?  Looked at Cnet?

Yes and yes.  Only found older models reviewed. Seem like a great deal and has 3  year parts and labor warranty. Currently have P4 1.8 with 256 MB Rambus memmory, running on XP Home. This would be a semi upgrade. Don't play any games or anything.
Have searched at lot for similar deal, and can only find refurbished with 90 day warranty at or near this price.

FWIW, I've not had good luck with Tiger Direct. Poor quality control, hardware incompatibility issues, refurbs listed as new product, etc. Their customer service is also sorely lacking. They've always managed to make things right, eventually, but the last time I dealt with them was the last time I will deal with them.

It may be a good deal, but my experience with Tiger Direct would cause me to issue a strong caveat emptor warning.

Seems like the above issues may not apply in this case. It has to be new with the 3 year warranty and such. They would have never opened the box. All problems will be dealt with from HP. As long as they send it to me that is.

The only thing that makes me look twice is the power supply.

It has 250w, which is pretty small, if you want to upgrade anything, add a graphics card or whatever you will probably have to up the wattage too.

However, since you said you don't want it for games it should do fine.

With a gig of RAM and XP Pro + the increase in chip speed it's a worthwhile upgrade for you.

The price of the components is up around what the fully assembled cost is, not even counting that 3 year warranty.

As long as the upgrade is a big enough step up, it's a no-brainer.

I recently bought some stuff from Tiger Direct and they were great, standard shipping arrived 2 business days after order.  Luckily the stuff worked fine so I didn't have to test RMAs or anything with them.

I have heard that they are slow/picky about getting out rebates, so make sure you follow the rebate procedure to the letter.

I guess that this is the response I was kinda looking for. Another thing steering me in this direction is that all "current" models or most current models have VISTA. Trying to stay away from it if possible.

I bought OEM XP Pro this month, it came with an upgrade coupon to Vista. That's why I bought it.

I will upgrade to it (for free) when I feel like it, when it's been out a while and (some) bugs/holes have been patched.

You might be able to do the upgrade too.  If you don't use it you could always sell it I suppose.

Looks like I would want to add some more memory if I do.  Think I'm going to go ahead and get it. Couldn't get the parts for that price.
