The cloud cover broke up just in time to see tonight's lunar eclipse here.

Very cool.

We've been watching out of the window.

[sm_anon]  I still don't get how this is different than the the Earth "eclipsing" the Moon once a month.

What's new?

The reason that you can't see the Moon for a few days each lunar cycle (i.e. "new moon") is because the Moon moves in front of the Earth relative to the Sun. IOW, you only have a direct line of sight to the Moon when it's daytime. Of course, you can't see it during the day because it's too bright out. When the Moon moves behind the Earth's relative to the Sun, that's when there's a "full moon".

The only time that a "lunar eclipse" can occur is during this full moon phase. The reason that it's such a rare occurrence is because the Moon's orbit around the Earth and the Earth's orbit around the Sun aren't on the same plane. The Moon orbits at a slight tilt to Earth's orbital plane. Full lunar eclipses can only occur when there's a full moon AND the moon moves into the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. You can get partial eclipses when the Moon is slightly above or below this plane at the same time that it moves farthest away from the Sun.

The same principle applies to "solar eclipses". They can only occur during a new moon phase AND when the Moon moves in the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun.

Now that makes sense.  Thank you.

Eclipse last night.  Earthquake this morning.  If I see frogs or locusts today I'm outta here.

Definately the sign of the apocalypse:
