Title: Straight left arm.
Post by: Jules on April 13, 2007, 06:12:28 PM
What does everybody here do to keep a straighter left arm throughout their swing.
I have been practising after reading to keep more pressure on your left thumb, and to use your right hand at the top of your swing(as it should overlap your left hand) to straighten out your arm??

I don't do much of anything other than remind myself to keep it straight right before I swing.  When I'm struggling with anything, I try to make it my last thought before my swing.  However, a straight left arm isn't something I struggle with (at least, Kev says I don't - he's my swing analyst :D ).

I shortened my backswing.  Seriously.

Yep, same for me as well. :)

Werd.

(Although, moreover, the concept of a straight left arm, is becoming antiquated.  Instead of attempting it as a mechanic of the swing, it should be more the bye product of a good takeaway, with proper upper body rotation, and setting of the wrists.  In short, Jules, if you think 'left arm straight', it, in and of itself, isn't bad.  But, by and large, it will/could short circuit the other functions necessary in your back swing.  Instead, think..'take the club head away with a pushing motion, starting with the left shoulder, keeping the club head outside* your hands to waist high.  Let the momentum of that action carry up, and allow your wrists to set naturally.  I think you will find, that with that 'one piece takeaway', that your left arm is straighter than it has been/you think it is.)

*ever so slightly, as seen from down the line.

My whole swing is becoming 'antiquated'. I overhauled a couple of years ago to a more' Modern' version, with pretty good results, but I was still struggling.

This year, I found a good teacher who took a look at me for a minutes and said:

'We're going to put some of the 'Old School' back into that swing, because it's a pretty good swing'. Hers is ALL about the footwork and leg drive, FWIW.

'Left Arm Straight' and 'Don't Move Your Head' still work nicely, although the subtle move is to ensure that your head does not move up or down, but a little forward is OK for the follow through.

Yeah, you're right.  It's just that they pick on me.  They're all bigger than me.  Smarter than me.  Have nicer hair than me. More gooder at computers than me.  Know how to type better than me, without having to say gooder. Spell better than me, although they use words I don't know on purpose, an probably spell them wrong on purpose, so I'll look them up, and can't find them, 'cause they spelled them wrong on purpose, 'cause they know I don't know what they mean, so I can't look them up, or find them, 'cause they aren't suppose to be hiding in there anyway.  It's out of bounds!

My twin cousins cultivated the 'Marcia Look' to the Nth degree, from the ironed hair right down to the shoes, which were called 'Marcia's', IIRC.

I'm sure I don't have any 'Brady Era' pics, but they were blond, blue eyed and cute. They weren't identical, but fraternal twins The older one (by like 8 minutes) was always the better looking one, and she was smokin' hot well into her 20's. The other, well not so much.

They both got married, fat and obnoxious, so that's how that story ends...

The poor girl just wanted a drill to keep the left arm straight, and here we are posting pics of  barely post pubescent eye candy from the 70's...

1) I have never posted anything relevant
2) What's the point

Good luck with that straight left arm thingy wish, and I was always a Jan guy too!

Back to threadjacking, sorry to say it wasn't Maureen McCormick but Pamelyn Ferdin, you've all seen her in a ton of stuff though.

And you get half a point for knowing that the Gorgon was a famous lawyer, but it was Melvin Belli not F Lee.

Another geek alert!
I record all the old episodes on the G4 channel 136 late at night, and then I watch them, I love the old ST, we were watching it last night and I told my wife and daughter that this episode used to give me nightmares when the Gorgon changes at the end. HEY! I was 5.

Wish, try some of these drills that Stroh mentions in the post, also when doing the "half shot/knockdown" drill put a headcover under your left armpit, and make sure it stays there until your arms come up in a natural finish. If it falls out before you hit the ball you know you're collapsing that arm (IE chicken wing), which is a power robber.

Not Belli, the fact that you know all that...

Pam Ferdin was also the voice of Lucy Van Pelt?

Cool factoid there...

On a semi-related note, Stacy Ferguson (aka Fergie from Black Eyed Peas) was the voice for Sally Brown in a couple of Peanuts cartoons.
