Title: They Do Exist!
Post by: stroh on November 01, 2007, 06:07:37 PM
So, I'm at work tonight.  I shoot outside for a quick heater between patients.  It's cold, so I'm in the car listening to Sports Center and I look across the (empty) parking lot and see these 2 figures walking side by side.  I think 'hmmmm, I'm not sure about this'  Dressed in what looks like all black.  Pants and jackets.  Then I get a glimpse of a flash from each of their chests.  Some sort of badges.  They continue to walk towards me, and I'm thinking 'WTF?  Who are these clowns?'  They get closer, and closer and then pass right behind my car.  I think strange.  Sure enough, they circle and come up to the window.

Now I'm thinking 'Ok, here we go........'  Then for a split second, I thought 'Are they some sort of
security patrolling the parking lot?  'Cause we could use it."

The one guy says "Good evening sir." As I'm reaching for my badge.......We are missionaries with The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints Mormon (something something however they say it)"

LOL  They were very nice.  They asked me the usual questions, and said they would love an opportunity to come to my house and give me a Book of Mormon, and talk about it.  I said I wasn't sure, but if they had something they could give I would take it and read it.  The one guy handed me a card, and wrote a phone number on it.  The one guy realized I was at work, and asked if I was on a break, and needed to get back.

The other asked about what I did, and we talked about it for a minute or two.  He said he has a friend that is interested in the field.

Then they said  basically "All right, have a great evening" and they were off across the parking lot about as quickly as they came.

Nice guys.  I did wonder, as they were talking, if they were part of the calendar.

I see pairs of them quite frequently in our neighborhood, dressed up and riding bikes.

When they ring out doorbell it's usually a very quick encounter as I'm trying to hold a beagle back from jumping all over them.

I'm usually nice to them. Most of them are just kids who don't know anything more than what their parents have told them their whole lives. In a way I feel bad for them. In a different way, i wonder what a 19 year old thinks he knows that I haven't already figured out. Much conflict.

I tell you what's worse than missionaries- returned missionaries.

So you're against missionary positions?

Is 'Returned Missionary' anything like 'Reverse Cowgirl'?

60/40 they were from Bountiful and a couple of years ago Monte was chewing on their azz.

I agree with spacey.  Nice kids for the most part.  Haven't a clue beyond four years of seminary and a lifetime of Sunday School.  I haven't seen them at my door for ages but I used to invite them in, offer them a drink and politely let them know I had no interest.  They usually gave the impression they were glad for the break.

Those dudes are the reason I'm in this country when you get right down to it.  In Utah for sure.  We were looking at New Zealand and the U.S.  The church broke the tie.

I would assume that in SLC, they would figure you were already one of them, or at least heard the pitch before.

How do they tell each other apart, so they don't walk up to some dudes door, and start in, and the dude's all like "I'm down", and the kid is like "prove it" ?

Is their like a yard sign, or like one outside light on the left of the door is a yellow bulb,  or is it more of flashing a gang sign?

We always had a bunch of them on my campus in Norman when I was in college.  I was nice to them all as they were always nice.  I just gave a polite no thanks but would participate in a little small talk.  One time my wife almost got suckered in big time.  Her and a girlfriend were pretty much stalked by one for awhile.  She eventually lost him.

I usually come up to the door with my S&M stuff on when they ring. They don't stay long.

Actually I haven't seen many down here recently. Guess all the Baptists have scared them away.

Jesus jammies.

Or they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses.

I forget which.

I'm guessing that they think jaundice is contagious.

You'd actually be amazed at how much they proselyte around here. To their credit, the entire 6 years I've lived in Bountiful, I've only had one visit from them in which I politely told them I'm not interested. Since then, I've been left alone, even though I see them in the neighborhood on a regular basis.

I suspect SLC is probably one of the worst possible missions to be assigned. It tends to be a "with us or against us" scenario (on both sides) around here.
