Post by: Aske on October 09, 2007, 08:46:13 AM

What did he do? Are you talking about freezing the kicker?

yeh, the "i want to call a timeout before the snap, even though i don't know when the snap is... so just wave off the play, ok? "   deal.

I'm waiting for the kicker to miss the first one and make the second.

LOL. that would indeed rule.   or maybe the league can do away with the ban on consecutive timeouts.  imagine having to make a 50+ yarder 4 times in a row

I hope they get rid of it but I'm not sure how.  Many times on 3rd or 4th down the coach actually needs to call a time out at the last second due to alignment issues or what not.  So I don't know how they make it illegal in this scenario only.

They should just say that timeouts need to called at the moment that the clock is supposed to stop. IOW, disallow pre-announcing of a timeout.

First time a kicker gets his knee blown out on a blocked kick on a null play...   :-\

That should put an end to it.

Coaches are the ultimate copycats.

Urban Meyer did the same exact thing against Auburn two weeks ago. And the Auburn kicker buried both of the kicks (40+ yarder). Said he saw Bielema at Wisconsin do it last year.

I don't like it but I'm not sure how to regulate against it.

Don't let coaches call time-out.  I'd be fine if we went back to that.  At the very least, don't give coaches access to the side/field/line judges.

I'd agree with that one.

That might work, I like that idea.

That would suck.  A coach calling 3 time outs to wear out the kicker's leg.

I think the whole idea of it is bull*feces*. I can see calling timeout when they first line up, to give the kicker time to think, but to wait until the snap is total crap.
The first coach to think of this sucks donkey *8==>* as do any *bunghole*s who copycat the idea.

You appear to be in the "make illegal" camp.  ;) ;D

I was thinking about this today. What happens when during the middle of the game the defense calls timeout just as the ball is snapped? I see it every week. The play starts but the refs come in whistles blowing and the timeout is taken.

Nothing different on the last play of the game except the coach has got his tongue in the linesman's ear to make sure he gets it called.

I think the problem is that the icing of the kicker timeout this way seems wrong to many but the confused defense in the third quarter just needs the timeout and is not deemed a problem.

As U.B. suggested, take away the ability of the coaches to call timeout and I think you have a good starting point.

I think this is bull*feces*, also. If the ball is being snapped, the play goes.
Just my .02.
