Golf Range Magazine Top 100 Golf Ranges in America for 2006
http://www.pga.com/news/pganews/pgamedianewsletter/range010907.cfm

I didn't even know that there was such a list.

As with the lists of top 100 Public courses published all the time by the golf mags, there's only a few that I've been to:
Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, Sacramento, Calif.
Mariners Point Golf Links, Foster City, Calif.
Pin High Golf Center, Alviso, Calif.

Didn't know of such a list either but I've been to this one:

Arundel Golf Park, Glen Burnie, Md.

Since the list is by Golf Range Magazine, I'm wondering if  :airquotes: "Top 100" is based on # visitors or earnings.

The ones that I've been to on the list are crowded, have lots of concrete hitting bays, and have a lot of demo days.  I never frequent them, and prefer another range that's basically a field where the grass tees aren't too sandy and has a great short game area and practice green.

You've just described Golf in the Round perfectly.   [sm_disgust]

I go there in the winter once or twice and only because the bays are heated.  I hate hitting off mats so it's basically just smooth out the driver swing after a layoff while the courses are closed.

What would be your pick for SLC?

I've always thought Mulluigans South was one of the best down there, and have never heard of Golf in the Round.

Mulligans definitely.  The one in No. Ogden is good too.

I like the range at Valley View GC because it's real turf and not super sandy.  Large pitch/chip area with target green and bunker plus two practice greens.  Only downside is the balls.  The balls are dreadful.  I bring my own and hit the short game area quite often.

GitR is just off I-15 and 33rd South.  On the plus side they do have a large teaching staff.  Got some great lessons when I first started out there from an English guy -- can't remember his name but he used to coach the Polish (national?) team.

Giving this more thought, other than the instructors there's really not another area where Mulligans doesn't absolutely blow GitR away.

Mulligans >>>>>> GitR.

But I usually prefer to just go hit at Eaglewood. Distances are hard to gauge accurately because you're hitting downhill, but the turf is pretty well kept, the balls are actually clean and in pretty decent shape, it's very seldom crowded, and it's a two minute drive from my house with no stoplights.

Agreed.  Pretty good range in all aspects except for working on distance control.  Good practice bunker (deep!!!) and putting green.

LOL. Hardly. Due to what I'm sure was an oversight by city planners, there's a road that links my slum in So. Bountiful with the upscale (not to mention highly overpriced) neighborhood of Eaglewood. I expect a barricade to be put in any moment.

Is GitR the driving range with an old beater station wagon about 180 yards downrange?  I think I used to go there quite a bit...my wife lived in Murray whilst we were dating.  If it is the one I am thinking of, no way should it have made the top 100.

That's the one.  Stationwagon is still there albeit a bit rustier than in your day.  Same story with the golf balls.

If I were to make a list, I think these would be my top 3 ranges (off the top of my head).

Maryland National, Middletown, MD
Paiute, Las Vegas, NV
Poppy Ridge, Livermore, CA
(in no particular order)

The Golf Club at Chelsea Piers, New York: $.25 cents a ball, mats only, and a net that  stops balls from going beyond 200 yards. It's great for what it is--a golf range in Manhattan--but objectively it can't possibly be one of the best ranges in the country.
