Title: My first Golfhos poll
Post by: Fuzzy on March 01, 2007, 09:33:49 AM
Had this discussion at work in regard to whether or not we should put a rookie employee in front of a customer. He gets his point across very well in e-mails but is sometimes uncomfortable to watch trying to talk his way through something.

Do you think you are a better speaker or writer?

Honestly, I feel pretty confidant with both. Perhaps a slight edge on writing, particularly since my mouth moves faster than my brain these days.

I am a fair writer, but an exceptional speaker.

It depends.

Expressing a thought, I can sit and type more flowing and lucid, than I can in speaking.  I'm one of those "damn, I should have said ____".  But when I need to compose something I can sit and take my time, and things come to me.

(man I'm gonna get slaughtered for that)

But, as far as "communicating".  I talk to patients all day.  I think I am well skilled at communicating with them.  So I would say I'm a pretty good talker/communicator in that regard.  Sometimes a salesman, when it comes to what I need them to do.

I am a better speaker than writer.  It is easier for me to communicate more clearly by speaking than writing.

Face to face communication allows you to see your listener's body language to help tell whether or not they are following you.  Which makes adapting to their style of thinking easier IMO.

I am getting better at writing but the people at my work would have to actually read their emails to notice.

I am well great at both but sometimes if I have to get my point across i would rather write it because i had onions for lunch or something but other times i'd rather speak it than write it because you can just say it and not have to type because i really don't actually write anymore because it takes too long and i can't even remember how to write in cursive writing which my daughter thinks is so funny because she does it but i can't even do it anymore! and she laughs so i definitely make clear concise points if i am talking works or typing but like i said not writing because you can't *goshdarn* read what i wrote its like that woody allen movie when he robs the bank and they don't give him the money because they can't understand the stick up note rofl! and so as you see i can write great but since i have to pick one i would probably pick the one or the other so ok i will pick writing.

For the last 2 years I have been working as my business unit's PSM coordinator.  This requires lot's of technical writing as I am saddle with writing operating procedures and manuals, as well as re-writes and updates.  I feel I am fairly proficient in that aspect of writing, as it is usually pretty cut and dry.  However, away from there I struggle both verbally and in writing to convey my thoughts for no other reason then sheer laziness.

I prefer writing over speaking, but my emails often become very long-winded and end up being ignored.  It bothers me when people reply to my emails saying "I'll just call you", so I often just disconnect my phone at work.

I'm superlative at both.

I can talk a venereal disease out of a west texas hooker, and my writing is often referred to as 'persuasive' by those who would know a little about writing.

I think I'm better as a speaker than a writer. I can do both, but in a face to face situation, I can get my point across pretty well.

I do both for a living.  My preference generally is for the medium that maximizes my obtaining the desired result.  Sometimes it's one, sometimes it's the other.

Back in the day, almost all my speaking was live, either one-on-one or to groups (classes, seminars, whatnot); these days, much of my speaking occurs via telephone and not in person.  I think there's a marked difference between in-person and telephonic speaking skills, probably for the lack of visual cues that Walfredo mentioned.

How about semi audible inarticulate inebriated clues?

Both for me, I think.  But I probably do more writing than talking just because most people aren't home when I would like to talk to them.

I can't tee it up any better than that I s'pose. Apparently my fingers move faster than my brain these days too.  :sad3:

Much better in the speaking department than the writing.

I'd have to say writing, although I am better on the telephone than in person.  On the phone the other person can't see you rolling your eyes or making faces in response to what they're saying, and it's easier to conceal ****ual attraction.

I prefer to write. People get confused with my accent sometimes.

Or give the impression that you're wearing pants.

I expect that's assumed by the other party, unless maybe if I was talking to you.  :)

I have more time to think about the point I'm trying to convey when I'm writing.

I'm superlative at both.

I can talk a venereal disease out of a west texas hooker, and my writing is often referred to as 'persuasive' by those who would know a little about writing.
I think you misunderstood.  I believe the work was 'pervasive'.

My first GolfHos Poll answer.

I would have to say writing.... as there is more time to contemplate the way the message will be presented.
