Title: Spacey gives in to the dark side...
Post by: spacey on February 13, 2008, 09:38:16 AM
I'm sure it's been rehashed over and over here, but I'm far too lazy to use the search feature.

With the impending change to digital, I've decided that rather than buy a converter for each of our TVs to continue to get sub-par reception of only local channels, I'm giving in. So... Dish Network or DirecTV?

I've already ruled out Comcast, as their non-introductory pricing is far more expensive than the other two and I'm already having difficulty bringing myself to pay for TV, particularly TV that continues to have commercial interruptions. I'm leaning Dish Network as they're the least expensive of the two and it appears that I can add local channels and DVR service and still come in lower cost than DirecTV's basic package.

Bearing in mind that I'm not concerned with HD in the foreseeable future, and that the only programming that might sway my opinion one way or the other would be the available sports (only those originating in the U.S., though  [sm_devil]), and the wife is only concerned with Animal Planet and Discovery, is there a clear advantage DirecTv over Dish?

A couple of my colleague's swear by Dish.  They say it is great and haven't had any problems what so ever.  I don't have either so I'm no help.  My in-laws have DirectTV and have all sorts of problems with it.  If I had to choose I'd try Dish.

But I wouldn't listen to me as I don't know.  I'm scared of using a satelite with all the trees around my house.  Doubt I'd get good reception with either one.

if you really plan for no hd anytime soon (  [sm_disgust]   [sm_deadhorse] )  then go with DISH and the DVR as long as that gives you the most channels YOU (and swmbo) like/want at the price.   for SD pic quality, both should be pretty much equal.   and dvr'ing is the only way to watch stuff (excluding live sports)

I have Directv based on recommendations of others 5 years ago. I have no experience with Dish but I've been pretty happy.

You're too late, I've already signed up for Dish. They're coming to install tomorrow.  [sm_shock]

Do I need a color TV for my satellite service to work properly?

Not sure.  Aske?

Does your tv look like this?

Yes.  And make sure they check your blinker fluid, too.

I pity the poor bastard climbing up your house to install the dish today.  We have 50 mph winds here and snow drifting all over the place.

50/50 chance he doesn't even make it up to the roof if he's using spacey's ladder.

Crappy day to be a dish guy or a flower delivery person.  [sm_shock]

Dude called and said he'd be at my house within the hour. We got ~12 new inches at our place overnight, so I also pity the fool.

I'm pretty sure the ladder is sound if the operator isn't a spaz.

I just went out to fill up the wife's van and grab a couple of cards.   The thermometer says 28* but with the wind it's as cold as it's been all winter.  I'm guessing real feel at my house is about zero.  It's definitely warmer down by the shopping areas.

If I had known I would have worn long pants.

I just kept thinking of that dip*feces* on spacey's ladder.  Career change my brother.  Think about it.

The wife informs me that dude showed up in a brand new Land Rover Discovery, so I suspect he's doing just fine.

Now, what you need to do spacey, is go out and drop the 120 bucks on a Slingbox.

See, now that you're dishing out a good 60 bones a month on premium pay tv, you'll need to stop wasting your company's money by spending all day here talking to us, and instead spend it watching tv.  The Olympics are on 6 months away.

Just so you know. If you call up Commiecast at the end of the 1 year introductory period and say "I'm swtichin' to direct tv" they keep you at the introductory price.

Just sayin'. We're on year 2 of a whizz bang deal. woot.
