It seems like they've forgotten the basic purpose of a driver's license.  It's supposed to be a license to drive, not some super-duper ID card.

Why on earth would you need a Social Security number to drive a car?  Why should you have to prove your immigration status before you get to drive a car?

The government should make sure that you know how to follow the rules of the road for the state/country in which you will be driving, and then give you a license.

Back home you don't need to carry any ID, ever, unless it's an underage drinking card.....

If you were stopped driving in a car you get a 'producer' which means you have to produce your documents (MOT, insurance, driving license) within 7 days at the local nick.

At no time are you required to carry them with you.

All the outcry about loss of civil liberty here is already too far down the road.

I still don't carry any ID here, most of the time.

One cool thing was that the car insurance company happily insured me for 5 years on a European license (good for many countries around the world, countries, not 'states')  then one day they said I must have a state license.  They wouldn't insure me if I didn't get one.  No pressure then.

You can actually fail the Euro license process, as opposed to the point the car straight and giggle at the right moment as the test is here.

Branding me with an ID card is what it's all about.
