Personally, what I'd love to see is a federal alternative-fuel initiative similar to Kennedy's man-on-the-moon resolve.

It's funny you should mention that. I've been watching "When We Left Earth, The NASA Missions" with my daughter. It's been neat telling her about how my parents woke me up so I could see the first lunar landing* (one of my earliest memories I still can recall pretty clearly) and answering her questions about the missions.

There is no question we could do the same for alternative energy. Arguably we have more of a head start on that than we did with going to the moon. It would be nice to have leaders actually lead and not come up with energy policies that are basically a hodge-podge of special interests. 


*little did we know at the time it was actually in a Hollywood-like sound stage in Area 51  ;D

My point being, if viable solar technology (and all sorts of other renewables) were the space program, its like we're holding off launch to dink around with the color of it's paint just to get it that perfect shade of white that looks good on camera. 

I mean, just shoot the *goshdarn* rocket off already and go get some moon rocks.

i've long stated that if we convert 1% of the earths surface to local solar plants that have 1% net efficiency, we could meet current energy needs.  it's pretty neat really how much solar irradiance we get

I ran some calculations

1% of the earth's surface happens to be the size of Iraq+Iran+Syria+Saudia Arabia+Jordan+Afghanministan+the several smaller puppet states occupied (for the moment) by muslim types.  Assuming the CIA is not pulling our chains with their "numbers"

Plus.........none of those properties are ever encumbered by clouds or shade of any kind.
