We've been having a lot of problems with the latest chatroom in the last couple of days with the XML errors, so it's time to try another one.

Just use the same Chat link as before, it now points to a new chatroom.

This one is called ARSC Chat (A Really Simple Chat), and looks pretty good so far.  It hasn't been customized at all yet, so if we have a good first impression, I'll work on modifications.

Let me know what you think, especially compared to the last chatroom.

Ok.  But the real problem, is that there are a few guys who regularly go in there, get all drunk, and pick on me.  I'm just sayin'.

I look forward to using the new chat. I've been xml'd enough that it was starting to give me a complex.

Actually, when stroh drinks he develops alcohol induced split personality disorder and picks on himself. It's sorta like that Phillip K. *8==>* novel A Scanner Darkly. Very sad, really.

I tried the new chatroom a little last night and had these thoughts:

- response time was pretty good.  We'll see how it handles a bunch of people at once, though.

- I like how you can select a color for your text, the old chatroom had some bad colors and repeated colors among people, so you had to keep changing names to get a new color

- The emoticons aren't as obvious and you can't click on them, but I don't see a lot of smileys used in chat anyway.

- One cool feature is the multiple rooms.  Sometimes when there's a bunch of people in the same room, it can get crazy with several conversations going on simultaneously, and it gets hard to follow, so maybe this will help.

Is there a setting to make TFT stop talking about his junk?

OK, I swapped that last chatroom out and went back to trying a java chatroom applet.  This one is a signed applet, though, which is good.

This chatroom is called  Parachat.

Unfortunately with this chatroom, you can't display the number of users in chat on the site like CHAT(4).

Yeah, I was hoping to avoid an applet, but the last few ajax ones have been disappointing.

I have a couple more non-applets lined up, though, if this one gets rejected.

I've just installed X7 Chat.  I've gone back to the non-java style chatrooms.

I tried to register, and it said I had an invalid username?????

Fuzzy and I have ran out of interesting things to say to each other.  We're moving into uncomfortable silences.

ok, this chat was good for some, but laggy for others.  I'll try putting up a new chatroom tomorrow when I'm sober.

Whew!  That was a throw down in there last night.  From What I remember. Man, that Night Train is a mean wine.

I looked at my list of chatrooms still left to try and they're client-side java applets. :sad3:  So I think I might leave the current chatroom (x7) up a little longer and make some of the changes requested.  (better smileys, limit font size, make chat window bigger).  I'm hoping the lagginess was just a fluke for some since others seemed to have no problem.

I was using an old, version 1 iMac from home last night.  It struggles with the smileys.  For example, if I open the "[more]" link and leave it running in the background with all those animations it'll dog that machine out until I close it.

So, next session I'll disable smileys if there's a way to do so and report back.  If there isn't a way I'll AdblockPlus 'em.

FWIW, everything was working fine until Clive showed up.

Dusty, does the current room have an option for the notifiers?

People come and go and aren't noticed now if people aren't actually in the flow of talking because they are away from the room/screen.

Yes, actually, there is an option for audio notifiers in this chatroom.  Unfortunately, the way they implemented it uses a quicktime plugin for your browser, which may not work for everyone.

I initially took out out the audio notification because I don't have that plugin installed and I got an annoying "missing plugin" error.  But I just put it back in so that we try it out.

I think the phpfreechat room used a small java applet just for playing sounds, which actually worked ok.  We'll see how the embedded quicktime sound works with this room.
