Post by: Aske on December 19, 2006, 04:16:48 PM
since we don't own a house / condo yet,  ours is mostly in car/cc's (and a big ass attorney bill being monthlied off)

total outstanding debt is around  20% of one year of our combined income.    :'(

working hard to get rid of it.

getting started in life suxass

We have next to no consumer debt. Her car is paid off, mine will be in August. Never carry a balance of more than a couple hundred dollars on the credit card.

Laura wants a new car but I think we'll wait to buy it until mine is paid off. Pretty sizable mortgage, but our equity is also pretty decent. A fair amount of student loan debt, but I don't really consider that to count.

We have a few years on you guys, and it sucked getting here, and we made some really stupid decisions along the way, but life is good now. Hang in there.  [sm_buddies]

I didn't have the time to respond yesterday.  And last night, it's to hard to type these with one eye closed.

We are pretty much the same, as mentioned before, I guess.  We have dug ourselves out, thorugh 11 years together, had plenty of ups, and downs.  We really need to dedicate more to savings, and it seems like evry week is paycheck to paycheck, but we actually got ourselves into decent shape.

The biggest thing is the house.  I wouldn't say over-extended, but I definitely work just to be able to say I live there.

We decided a couple of months ago, it's not worth it, and listed the house for sale.

1. House.

2. Both vehicles. 2005 with 4 years left on each.

3. 1 credit card w/ $1450.00 cap.  (this card goes up, and down throughout the year.  It's our Hotel/Vacation/slush/emergency utility.

That's it for consumer debt.  We have(do) paid cash for everything else.  Visa Checkcard = Best idea yet.

We are getting a 10% bonus this year,  my plan is to prepay as much of the recurring BS for the year, as I can.

No credit cards.

Mortgage, we work in the mortgage field so rate is pretty good.

Car loan taken out in July for car, no payment on others.

Not been paycheck to paycheck for years, however, I don't have fond memories of what that was like.

Keep grinding Aske, the light comes later.

Similar to TFT.

Mortgage, which is very manageable. When we built 9 years ago we put as much down as possible. Well worth it now. Plus, we refinanced 5 years into a 30 year loan and opted for a 20 year loan. Knocked 5 years of payments off and actually lowered the monthly bill by $40.

Wife's car loan.

One credit card, paid off every month.

We're in a favorable position today. But I remember when I lost my job in '91, 9 months after buying my first house. I can't get the smell of sh!tting my pants out of my mind ;D

Needless to say it was a very motivating life experience.

Keep plugging away. You'll be fine.

Don't worry... I'm sure when your kids put you in a nursing home later in life that smell will be all too familiar.... [sm_shock]

Was it affected by 9/11?

Mine was, just before they green carded me they naturalized (!!!!) 2 guys with 'known terrorist connections' who were even on the do not admit at borders list.

It was January 2003 before I got my card, set back by that stuff.

Our attorney bill was around 2500 but I did most of it myself.  He was an  :asshat:

yeh, it seems like a big mess after 9/11  i mean i'm sure with time* we could confidently and accurately track down all pplication forms, data, etc and fill them out right.  but without tons of time for such,  and the risk/reward of f'ing it up...  just pay the damn attorney to do it right.. although, the story about hats sounds familiar.

the risk/reward of f'ing it up...

That was the single thing that led me to an attorney at all.

Fear factor is well worked on by those guys.

He was still useless, unless you needed an ass for a hat, of course.

We're doin' pretty good all things considered.

-House- but there is enough equity in it that we could sell it and walk away with probably close to 100k...-mortgage- is about 1k/month for 2300 sq foot split level

-Cars- are paid off

-Credit Cards- we've done pretty good, we do have one that's at about 4k right now, we keep telling the girls (19 & 17) to be sooooo careful with ccards, they probably won't listen.  >:(

-401k- we both have one, but I'm losing my job here soon so I won't be adding to it until I find another job

All in all I ain't complainin', It's never been about money or materialistic needs for me, just lookin' to be a good person in this life and move up in my next, to maybe a dog.  :)

1. Mortgage - but as with Seamus we have enough equity that if we invested $80-90 in a remodel/additio we could sell it and pay cash for a really nice home in town. we are considering that.

2. Student loan about $10k

3. One car about $2k left.

No credit cards

We got out of month to month about 1 year ago. We took a 50% cut in income when my wife decided to quit her executive job and stay at home with our kids. Best decision she ever made. Between some changes and my increased salary we have made it back to the other side.
