What does karma stand for underneath our names?
Some people have a rating, with smile and applause.
Please explain, as I have virtually nil computer sense!!(but I think I am getting better!!! :))

If you click on someone's applause link, their karma goes up.
If you cick on someone's smite link, their karma goes down.

You have to give a reason for the smite/karma.

If dystopia disagrees he will have smoted on you bigtime, allegedly.

It's not for every half grin post, just for special ones, funny or not.

It's funny, I used to do a lot of testing of the karma feature on the admin account and for a while it was negative, but looks like it's back to positive now.

Fuggin admin getting into chit he knows f all about.

Below the word Karma which is below your Name and location on the left hand side.

Under Karma I have No. of posts, then on or offline then below that a view profile icon and a personal message icon. Do i need to turn something on in my profile? Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I AM getting old. :sad3:

There's a minimum number of posts you need to have before you see the applause/smite links.  I believe it's set to 20.

Is there a way to post a log of the reasons given for granting Karma without seeing who the granter or grantee is? I, for one, think it might be kind of funny to see. Then again, I'm easily amused.

No. Or maybe it was yes. I don't remember, but it was one of the two for sure. Hope that helps.

Sure.  Some of the reasons are pretty funny. Others, just gibberish.  What I would do is only show the reasons going forward from when I make the change.  It wouldn't be fair to those who entered a reason in the past thinking it would stay private.

I've got two questions about implementing this, though, and would be interested in everyone's feedback.

1) Which would people prefer, a new page listing just the karma reasons as you said, without displaying the granter or grantee as you said?  Or going to someone's profile and seeing the karma reasons listed for when they received karma, but not the granter.

2) What about smites?  Should these reasons be displayed, too?  On the one hand, it's nice to find out why a smite has been given, but will people be more reluctant to smite someone for being a *8==>*head if there's more transparency?

I grant you permission to make all mine from the past public.  :)

I wasn't looking for any kind of "process implementation," just maybe a snippet of some of the reasons given, just to see what kind of silliness was out there. I formally withdraw the request, as it appears to be more problematic than I was thinking.

I thought about this some more, and I think that more transparency might be good in this area.  For example, someone might have no idea of the why they're receiving a smite, and it could be a way for a member to send an anonymous "that kind of behavior is annoying" message.

So, now when giving karma or a smite, there's a checkbox under the reason allowing the applaud/smite to be public or not.  This reason will show up under a user's profile if that checkbox is checked.  But the person giving the karma/smite is still kept hidden.

You can view the "public" karma changes under someone's profile.

Let's try it for a few weeks and see what happens.  If everyone ends up pissed off at each other, I'll remove it.

If you have any suggestions on how to improve this, let me know.
