Title: CX Micros are on the way! (Update- They are here, initial impressions)- w/ pics
Post by: spacey on February 09, 2007, 09:08:29 AM
I got my tracking information yesterday. The long awaited CX Micro wedges are on their way and I should have them in hand on Monday.  [sm_eekdance]

I ordered a SW and LW in both finishes (satin and platinum). I'm going to do a head to head comparison, one set on Wishon High Launch wedge shafts, and one set on Rifle Spinner 5.5s.

Of course, none of this makes a difference until there's an open course for me to play on. The snow is mostly melted in the lower elevations. Usually some of the crappier local tracks will open up mid-winter if they're mostly thawed out. I'm crossing my fingers.

Apparently wedges are golf clubs designed for chipping a golf ball and come in several different lofts.

If I were stroh, I'd give you karma for that, but I'm a bit of a miserly *fudge* when it comes to dishing out karma. Ah, what the hell. +1

4 whole minutes? Seems like you could do it twice in that amount of time.  [sm_devil]

I would like, at this point, to advise everyone that TFT did not, in fact, "do" me yesterday. No matter how much he begged.

So FedEx surprised me this morning with my special delivery from Wishon. I glued them up this afternoon and the epoxy is curing as we speak. Initial impressions:

They are pretty. I'm torn between the satin (which got the Wishon High Launch wedge shafts) and the platinum (Rifle Spinner 5.5s). The satins have a clean and classic look to them. Shiny without glare, which is nice. The platinum is a cool looking finish, almost like a brownish coppery patina. How it wears remains to be seen, obviously, but definitely an attractive wedge.

The milling is nowhere near as deep as the SMT Durometers. The faces are "textury" without being rough. I'm guessing these won't chew up balls nearly as much as the Duros (one of the reasons I dumped them). The "micro grooves" look a bit unusual but if they work, I won't complain.

No teardrop shape here, they are big and they are round. I don't imagine it's going to be a problem for me to adjust, but I can imagine some might be turned off by their shape. They also have slightly wider soles than I'm used to. My problems with wedges, more often than not, come from thin shots, not fat, so I don't know if this is going to be a hindrance, a benefit, or neither.

Hopefully I can provide an update in terms of actual performance soon. I'm hoping to find an open driving range where I can take them for a test drive. The only one I know for certain will be open has mats, which I hate, so I won't be going there.

Awesome.  I like the Platinum.  Any trouble seating the ferrule?

Not really, although I think the Spinners are ever so slightly thicker than the Wishon shafts, the ferrules didn't go the Spinners quite as well. I use the epoxy as lube method, and a Golfsmith "Mr. T" ferrule installer, which seems to work quite well.

Great pics!

You're right about how round they look.  I didn't grasp that from the catalog pictures.   i like the clean minimal writing.

nice monte pic!  He's got the cool "dipped in white paint" thing going on with his tail and feet. :)

Very nice looking wedges -- the platinum finish gets my vote.  Will probably be picking a set up myself.

I ordered some platinum ones myself, also to replace the SMT durometer.  Mine should get here Wednesday, now if the snow that has been here for 2 months would go away!  Nice Pics, makes me wish I had ordered the satin ones. lol

I was going to order the platinum, but might have to reconsider the satin, they are sweet looking.   :'(

I'll be curious to see how they play.  I'm much more prone to thin than fat shots myself and instinct tells me thinner is better, wider soles are more apt to skip into the ball with my swing plane.

Mine are ready to go, the bounce seems perfect for chipping on my carpet, might not be enough for in the snow though.  The platinums are dead ****y!  Head size is identical to the Durometer, face is a little smoother but the sole has a nice grind to it.

I was chipping from the carpet onto the couch last night (mrs. s just loves when I do that) and was experimenting with rolling the face open. That zero degree bounce heel is nice. I might end up ditching my LW if it works that well off grass.

My living room is OB. :(

I had the 56º bent to 54º, and got a 60º.

I finally got these out on the range today. (It's been since October that I have even swung a club. Holy *feces*, talk about teh sukk!  :sad3:) It's hard to offer any real review since I was hitting beat up range rocks off of wet sanded grass, but for the most part I was pleased.

The feel of these is about half way between the last two wedges I've tried (Durometers and Maltby M-Series). Crisp but not hard, definitely not buttery soft. They give a nice little "click" to let you know you've hit them right. Solid shots gave a good one hop and stop. It seems that if I can do that with range rocks, I should be able to get these to hold a green pretty well.

The platinum finish is definitely not bullet proof. I mi*feces* (an apparently really dirty or scuffed up ball) off the toe and have a nice little shiny spot as a permanent reminder. The soles also already show pretty significant wearing of the finish. I didn't expect the finish to last forever, but I'm a little surprised at how non-durable it really is. Probably my only disappointment, but no biggie.

The Rifle Spinner 5.5s in the platinum finish are definitely too stout for me, should have gone with a 4.5 or a 5.0. The Wishon High Flight shafts definitely work as advertised- high ball flight, decent spin, soft landing. Looks like the satins will probably be the ones to make the cut.

Thanks, Spaceage.  I was going to go with the platinum myself, saw your picks and thought the satin looked really good.  Going to order the satin now.

You're welcome wishbone. I think you'll like them a lot.

Holy *feces*, I just re-read the review, how many times can a person say "definitely" in 300 words or less? I sound like *goshdarn* Rainman.

As long as you don't start saying "like" that often it's fine. ;)

Finally got to hit mine, I don't think the platinum finish will last very long.  Can't really evaluate them yet, too rusty.  My other new club is an Exotics 4 wood, it gets a WOW!
