Title: Holy *feces*!! I Was Wrong.
Post by: stroh on March 06, 2010, 12:01:53 AM
When I first heard of this I mocked and ridiculed it.

Now, I must see it.  This looks awesome.

And 2:31..........Brilliant!     ;D

A few comments:

1. The cinematography looks nice.

2. Jaden Smith is actually young enough to be at an age when kids do get picked on rather than a 23 year old in high school, where nobody really gives a *fudge* unless you do something stupid like try to make ****y time with the head cheerleader who's dating the captain of the football team. Oh, wait. OK. In reality the cheerleader wouldn't give you the time of day anyway let alone go on a date with you to Golf N' Stuff, so if you persisted, you'd be like a stalker, and then you'd deserve to get pummelled. I still stand by the 23 year old part though.

3. I can no longer mock them for casting a Chinese dude to play a Japanese guy.

4. The film may look better than it actually is because of the "epic-sounding" music during the training sequences in the trailer. They probably recycled the music from another movie for this trailer.

5. The music in the background during the flyswatter scene was kinda funny.

6. At least change the name to the The Gung Fu Kid. WTF?!?! I think people will still get the connection. If not, they're probably too young to have even heard of The Karate Kid anyway.

On second thought, the title could make sense if Parker Andre Xiansheng was learning karate out of a book, and then Han Xiansheng said "WTF? Learning that inferior Japanese crap out of a book? That's like the Toyota of martial arts. *fudge* that! I'll teach you Jeet Kune Do, it's like the sweet Cadillac of martial arts--with a set of 22s."

Excellent take.

When I first heard about it I assumed they were simply going to remake it.  I wasn't expecting them to reinvent it.  Seeing the trailer in that light I'm interested.

Plus what got me most was all the humor.  If they carry that theme throughout (like it seems that they are even poking fun at themselves for remaking it) then I think it will play well.  And Chan can pull that off.

The only thing is that in the original it was OK for little Pat Morita to kick the *feces* out of a group of menacing 20-something looking high schoolers dressed up in Skeletor outfits, but I don't know how it's going to play out with Chan and kids that are supposed to be in their 'tweens and early teens.

LOL I just read the plot summary (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1155076/plotsummary) on IMDb:

Quote
12-year-old Dre Parker could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life. Written by Columbia Pictures

I guess that's a good enough excuse to keep the original title. They're probably going to have the other kids mock him as the "Karate Kid" too.

Looks better than I expected.  Will likely see it (although I seem to have a 5-10 year lag on seeing movies these days, so I'll wait until it comes out on holovid/bluray3/greenstream or whatever the tech is by then)

5. The music in the background during the flyswatter scene was kinda funny.

lmao!  love that song!

<----- goes to fire up the mp3
