Title: The ordeal is over (finally)
Post by: spacey on February 02, 2007, 02:18:47 PM
Laura (mrs. spaceage to those of you who haven't been following) has cleared her final hurdle. She took her NCLEX (nsg. licensing exam) yesterday and has confirmed with DOPL that she has passed and is a fully licensed Registered Nurse. Raise a glass.  [sm_beertoast]

Maybe two.

[sm_beertoast] [sm_beertoast]

My mum's a RN on the last year or two of her career.  She's a DON at a small, private, friendly and efficient home health care agency.   [sm_devil]

It's getting tougher and tougher to find good nurses.  So she says.

Which agency?

My mom is also a nurse, but hasn't done clinical care for the better part of two decades. She's in administration now, and will confirm that good nurses are indeed tough to come by.

She worked at Applegate H.H.C. (SLC office) for years and years as DON.  She finally bailed after getting fed up with the most recent administrator who is basically a jumped up aide with, one must presume, some sort of connection.   [sm_naughty]

I can never remember the name of the place she works now.  It's right there in Bountiful though.  Small startup and Mum's just trying to get it established before she retires to her gardening.   8)

Applegate is one of the better agencies around, they seem to do things the right way. Lots of grossly underqualified nursing administrators out there. We've had more than our share. They tend to wash out pretty quickly, but some manage to stick around long past their demonstrated uselessness. We've lost some very talented, not to mention tough to replace, clinical staff at the hands of terrible nursing management.

I can't possibly imagine why anyone would attempt to start up a home health agency in the current market (hugely competitive and very poorly reimbursed) unless it were for the sole purpose of providing hospice care, which is one of the few homecare services which receives reasonable reimbursement rates anymore. We have a hard enough time competing and we have the support of a huge healthcare system behind us. I've been here 5 years and I've seen literally dozens of agencies come and go. Hopefully they'll get it right, it's nasty out there.

There is a hospice side to the current place although as I said everything is just getting going.  Just between you and I and the internets I don't think they'll make it in the long run.

Mum's giving it the old college try though and trying to avoid becoming emotionally invested in the place.  She's just trying to position herself intelligently for retirement vis-a-vis social security and all that.

I was thinking the same thing.  It'd be like naming a sunrise after her, but it's the thought that counts. ;)

Is that a short joke?

Short jokes put me in a rage.  On the other hand, to think that maybe I'm not the only drunk halfling on the forum gives me a certain comfort.

nurses are hot!  I even married one.

Do you have a picture you'd like to share....preferably her in a nursing uniform/scrubs?

Congrats! She could go anywhere with that, I know nurses are in high demand here in the DFW area.

I'll try to snap one, but she generally leaves for work before I'm out of bed so it would have to be after she gets home from a shift. The problem with that is that after a shift she sometimes has remnants of piss, blood, *feces* or some other random bodily fluid on her (sometimes a combination of any or all of the above). If you're into that sort of thing, perhaps we can make some sort of arrangement.

I thought you were more of a "technician". I didn't know you were one of these:

You are correct sir!  (not a male nurse)

We have a National Registry Exam we need to pass in order to work as a technologist.  We also have additional exams for each dicipline of radiology.

Months of study, hundreds of questions, plenty of angst.
I have passed 4 of them.

I couldn't be a nurse.  Apparently the have a tendency of coming home with *feces*, piss, blood, and bull semen on them.  Not my bag.

I can always tell what kind of day she's had by how long the scrubs stay on when she gets home. Some days she plops down on the couch and chit chats for 10-15 minutes, other days she's in the shower before the garage door finishes closing. I don't know how she does it, but the world needs 'em.

Laura lived in Boise for a couple of years and her sister still lives there. She'd move there in a second if I suggested it. Unfortunately, I suspect you're correct about my welcomeness, or at the very least my employment prospects.

4% unemployment. Pretty sure you could find something.

Do they hire left of center former headbangers in Idaho? Interestingly, with Montana turning into a (mostly) blue state with two Dem senators and a lone GOP US representative, Idaho seems to be flanked on the west and now the east by libs. Well, not counting Wyoming which is about as red as you can get.

Lefty-lib sometime headbanger living in Bountiful, Utah?  Good God man, you live dangerously.

Maybe you have a secret Bat Cave egress or something.  Entrance/exit on Beck Street near Northern Exposure.   [sm_hump]

I stayed out of her way, drank bourbon, and didn't complain when she spent late nights and weekends studying with her friends from school or when she went to CA for a week. It's not a perfect system, but it worked for us.
