Title: Snow Leopard - Mac knowing guys
Post by: dystopia on August 30, 2009, 04:05:18 PM
I know there are at least a few mac guys here (UB, tdcoly, etc.)

What's are your plans, if any, for Snow Leopard?

LMAO at the folks that waited in line for this.  Even I'm not that much of a loser, and I out-loser most of the people on the planet.  (although I'll give even odds on my standing in line for the Apple tablet  :-\)

No Lines For Snow Leopard OS

...
"Wow... I am the line at Apple for Snow Leopard. Yay. Nerd." writes James Hohenthaner, who is based in the Detroit area. (Emphasis ours.)

Just got to Apple expecting a line of about 20. Here's the line," Grant McGrath tweets, posting a picture of one guy standing outside an Apple store. Grant, who lives in Raleigh, N.C., adds, "Went to the restroom. Now I'm number 3 in line. I really thought the line would be longer."

Running OS x 10.4 runs just fine on my iMac.  Don't really care to upgrade.

The apple store in our mall is always crowded though.  Didn't see it today.

I'll probably spend the 29 bucks to upgrade just for the Quicktime X and the smaller footprint.  Not right away, but eventually.

(29 dollars for an operating system upgrade? [sm_shock])

I am running a Mac G5 since 12/03 and works as good now as then.  Snow Leopard can't be installed on this machine.  Wife runs Mac Pro and does a ton of photo editing with Aperture and photoshop.  She will probably order it.

Snow Leopard is more than an upgrade.  It's essentially a major OS rev.  $29 is a screamin' deal honestly.  It's setting the bar for Microsoft on Windows 7 pricing.  $5 says the prices in the link don't hold up.

A 64 bit Finder with GCD has me excited.  I think it's going to be iPhone 3G --> iPhone 3GS sort of speed increases but without upgrading hardware.

I'm holding off although Amazon delivered the box on Friday ($5 discount, free shipping).  I don't like being bleeding edge especially on a work machine.  I don't care about CS3 and some other third party apps falling by the wayside but I'd be pissed if Eclipse, its plug-ins, anything else I need to do my job stopped working.  You might want to go out to the sites of those third party products you can't live without and see if they either work on Snow Leopard already or have an upgrade scheduled.

Ok I probably will upgrade eventually.

I'm still trying to figure out the one I got.  I'm more concerned about what will happen when they start to run out of cat names.

The drive to satisfy consumer demand and consumption is destroying our natural environment.

Yes, cat names are becoming obsolete.  However, they can start using *humid grotto* names are any other derivatives of *humid grotto* names available.  Then we can go to beaver names, etc.   ;D

Dys, you have to install xcode/dev tools from the SL distribution.  The 10.5.x version won't work.

Also, be prepared to run into Bootcamp/Windows 7 issues (if you roll that way.)

Isn't this a disclaimer on any upgrade of any kind from any company?  ;)

I'm in no hurry to upgrade.  I finally got my laptop setup so that I'm comfortable with it.  I tend to be pretty slow with OS upgrades.  I like to have my setup mirror the bulk of users out there.

Hey, you wouldn't happen to be in the market for CS4 would you or know anyone who is?  I won a copy of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Web Premium (mac) at a hackathon a short time ago that I'm looking to unload.  I'm only interested in Fireworks out of that suite, so it makes more sense for me to ebay the massive, honking CS4 and buy fireworks separately.  Although now that I think of it, your upgrade cost from CS3 probably isn't that much.

Sounds good.  I'll do some research on what would be fair and PM you tomorrow.
