Title: Goodbye RSL
Post by: Uisce Beatha on January 29, 2007, 03:11:43 PM
Mayor kills plan for soccer stadium (http://www.standard.net/live/news/96786/)

This was in the cards once they decided Sandy (ultra-farked-up suburb of SLC) was the place.  Major bummer.

Bummer indeed.

Looks like they had a sensible ticket pricing plan too.

"In 2008, the first season in a new stadium, Real predicted it would average 15,400 fans at each game at $22.78 per ticket. Attendance would rise to 19,360 by 2013 when a ticket would cost $30.72, the team said. "

RSL averaged 12,689 in paid attendance last year in a stadium built for football, having no superstars and with a team that missed the playoffs.  15K isn't so unreal in a brand new stadium (one with real grass even), having Freddie Adu on the roster and the team definitely improving.

They should wear body armour and helmets and let fat kids play.

Then it really would be ghey.

Karma +1.  Simply because I racked my brain for five minutes and still couldn't come up with that.

The Saga Continues...

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_5141310

A bill emerged Thursday on Utah's Capitol Hill that could bring a Real Salt
Lake stadium to Sandy and salvage Utah's two-year-old soccer franchise,
which is being aggressively courted by investors in St. Louis.

If the measure passes - it was crafted behind closed doors this week with
the blessing of Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson
and legislative leadership - it would snatch at least $20 million for the
project out of Salt Lake County coffers, which critics allege could result
in a countywide property-tax hike.

I hope it works out because as sad as it is, and it is, it's pretty easy to drive down to SLC to watch a game. If they could just come up with something better than Reall Salt Lake. seriously.... :sad3:

The name or the team itself?

The name thing is a bit goofy.  I've never really bought in to the concept of ripping off names from top clubs around the world.  At least we have lofty pretensions here in SLC.  Madrid is about as prestigious a club as exists in the world.  God forbid, we might have ended up Chivas Salt Lake.   [sm_devil]  ;)

The team's getting better.  I expect they'll make the playoffs next season.  Of course, they might play those playoff matches in St. Louis.   :(

The name. It seems to me, by choosing "Real SL" you are equating yourself with Real Madrid, which is foolish. I thought "Salt Lake 04" would have been pretty cool. Even though it could relate to Schalka 04, they are not as well none around these here parts.

Personally I was amazed that they didn't select a name that ended in two zs. We're sorta lame like that around here.

United Methodist Church. The elders would never let that happen. Plus DC already has that one.

:boxing:

I like Checketts.  He was *8==>*ed about from day one on this deal.  And I believe that Larry Miller had a lot to do with it.  Last thing he wants is competition for:

Utah Jazz
Concert Venues
South Valley Shopping/Recreation
Utah Man of the Century
Whatever else his ego requires...

Anything I say of Checketts can be tripled for LHM.

Checketts on the hill right now with the big boys having a press conference to say RSL will stay in SLC.

At least he's dealing from a position of strength - good record, lots of goals, etc.

Oh wait...  [sm_anon]

I give Ellinger no more than two weeks.

Hey - bring em to St. Louis I say  [sm_naughty]

Of course - we don't have a stadium for em here either.  Wonder what the St. Louis investors had in mind anyway?

Wonder what the St. Louis investors had in mind anyway?

1. Get soccer team from SLC
2.
3. Profits!

Bump profits to #2 and I think you have it  ;).  We have a good soccer market here, I think it would work.

...but I was actually referring to a place to play.  Nothing around here would suit an MLS team.  The field that SLU plays at just isn't up to the task - perhaps a partnership with the University for a new facility would work though.

We've had no problem putting people in the seats.  Fifth out of 13 teams so far this season and the same overall last season - http://web.mlsnet.com/stats/index.jsp?club=mls&year=2007.

The new stadium will help a lot.  It's in the suburbs and an affluent one at that.  Soccer mom central.  It'll even have a grass pitch.   :P

The team needs to start performing though.   :'(
