Apparently, it's due to a spelling error. Somewhere along the line, "gwe-duk" was anglicized to "goeduck." A later typo in anthropological records takes us to today's spelling of "geoduck," even though the original pronunciation has sort of been maintained.) ( I think that's the name), and we watched Sunday Morning this past week, and there is a community college whose mascot is the Artichoke (it has heart).

Totally not to be an ass, but it's UC Santa Cruz that's the Banana Slugs, not Santa Barbara.
