Title: Leaves?
Post by: spacey on November 03, 2007, 04:51:28 PM
I have ethical issues with taking something that is biodegradable and putting it in a plastic bag to dispose of it. I run my mulching mower (yeah, it's gas powered) over the things, and let them decompose over winter. A guy down the street takes a similar approach: he sweeps them into the street to let cars/wind/water do the dirty work.

You?

Back in our old house, when we had leaves, I would mulch the *feces* out of them, and then take what was left (which was basically leaf dust) to the city compost.

You mulch the dog poop in there too?

Well, I was mulchin' 'em 'til the lawn mower decided it was a good time to take a break.  Now, we have to rake 'em and bag 'em.  We usually do bag a few bags just so the kids can jump in 'em first, but now it looks like we're gonna be bagging for the rest of fall.  We'll be bringing 'em somewhere that can dispose of them.

My mower can barely make it through the grass let alone anything else. I think the shaft is bent.

Maybe I need Cialis.

We're not allowed to bag them. We just pile them in the street and they get hauled away.

Some I mulch and put on garden. Some I burn. I got a bunch-o leaves on my place.

Nope, scoop it up. I'm supposed to bag that too, but I don't. Seems stupid.

Un-bagged?

pretty common in cities around here. the city just sucks them up with a vacuum truck.

Mow 'em while the grass is still active up and put it in the yard waste recycling bin. The dog poop goes in there also, and now the recyclable food waste goes in too.

Not in this neck of the woods, anyone familiar with the term "urban flooding"?

Yes, unbagged. You'd think that they would blow all over the place but they don't, especially once they get wet. The upside is that it's better for the environment, and is probably a more efficient use of municipal resources since they plan it out and only have to do a pickup once in each neighborhood. The downside is that you often have a leaf (pine needles, mostly) pile in front of your house for a month since the leaves start falling long before they finish falling (especially in recent years with warmer temps for whatever reason you want to believe).

Mulch the leaves on the lawn and put straight in trash can.  I try and pile up all the other leaves and have a crew come once a year.  They take them all away on a tarp and don't use bags.  We have ass loads of leaves all over our property each year.  It would take me forever to get rid of them all.

So far, they're still there.

Plan on mowing one more time to get the first lot.  After that, I'll spread 'em thin with a leaf blower and call it winter.

Anybody ever use one of these?

They really are the shizzle.  Karen's brother has one, and we used it one year at our old house.  Just like vacuuming the carpet.  The suction is awesome, and shreds the leaves into dust.

If we move to house that has lots of leaves, I will buy one for sure.

yep, i've had one for 10 years. i'm the tim taylor of the neighborhood. if it's a lawn tool i own it. :D

i use my tractor to run them all into the center of the yard, and then suck them up with the chipper shredder and dump them in the garden.  ;)

back in the day (living at home as a kid, doing neighborhood lawns... and this is area where people have all kinds of oaks and other trees blanketing their entire yards...)  just used old fashined mulching mower blade.

Bag 'em and the city picks them up.  Turns them into compost.
