Title: OMG! Clive's Gonna Play Golf! -- RESULTS ADDED!
Post by: Clive on July 29, 2008, 01:59:53 PM
My BIL is having a vasectomy.  As a present (either for himself or a gift from his wife), he's playing at Fox Den Country Club a couple weekends hence.  I am invited to school him on the finer points of shrugging off quadruple-bogeys while chugging overpriced beer.

The course sounds a bit schizophrenic:
Quote
Enjoy North Carolina's best kept secret! Fox Den Country Club's 18-hole Championship Golf Course with Crenshaw bent grass greens and Bermuda fairways. The beautiful rolling terrain and scenic views are those that golfers of all abilities will enjoy! Fox Den Country Club was design by renowned architect Clyde Johnston.

Fox Den is a well rounded course with lots of variety that will test your shot making abilities. The course length varies from 7005 yards from the gold tees down to 5300 yards from the red. The first few holes offer a parkland feel, set on mildly undulating land. The next six holes will remind you of mountain golf and the last six will make you feel like you're on a beach course.
Their course photo tour also doesn't make the place look like much; here's hoping it's just not photogenic.

Hmmm... I sense the beginnings of a get rich scheme.

Wow, you weren't kidding about the photo tour.  Most of the pics on the site look great, but they need to redo the hole by hole pics.

Maybe they shouldn't have added RoundUp to the irrigation pond.

Looks like any other golf course, so I have no doubt after the third hole you'll hate being there and ignore everyone.  Dead pull left. Drop. Bad pun.   Vitamin Water.  Rinse and repeat.

Have an excuse yet for why you can't have the Hennessy in the clubhouse after the round?

Have fun.

(seriously, I do hope you have fun)

Shot a 65 ... for 14 holes.  Four X's -- one to hasten play when my "short-game" was bogging us down, two because I'm stupid, and one because I just couldn't hit a simple 9-iron.  Other than those flameouts, I had five pars and only one hole worse than bogey.

Encouraging: I never hit That Point In The Round, the one where I'm looking to see how many holes I have to endure before I'm done.

More encouraging: I walked off the course actually feeling positive about playing again.

Off-pissing: #16, 155-yard par-3, water down the left.  Gentle breeze into us.  Pin up.  Select smooth 8-iron.  Really good swing, great contact.  And suddenly, the club feels really light and there are two things in the air.  One, the head of my 8-iron, whirlybirds about 75 yards out and splashes down.  Ball finishes just short.  The shaft (UST ProForce Rv2 115) had snapped at the hosel.  Shoes and socks off, wade a little and fish the head out of the drink.
