i just find it strange that a certain unnamed PHD pens fan who lives in pittsburgh always wants to blame the corporation and not the consumer.  ;)

the average consumer is dumb. dumber than *feces* in fact judging by the results on shows like 'are you smarter than a 5th grader' ...they will buy the maximum that they can afford from what they are given to choose from. use ads to convince them they need suvs to drive 1 mile to the grocery store with mom as the lone passenger to buy 2 items..... and Voilà it is done. factor in that the average 'korprashun  of GM's size should have slightly longer term knowledge and vision through market/resource/engineering/blahblah  research.... in short they should know what's going to happen to materials/energy prices....
... while they have some shareholder duty to return short term profits, they also have shareholder duty to not obliterate themselves into bankruptcy by not continuing to produce unsustainable worthless products. looking back to 1998 or so.... I would say give them a dose of medicine and force them to buy smarter.   it might hurt next quarter and next years profits, maybe even next 3 years profits, but you might still be around in 2020.  under the path chosen, by 2020 , GM will be as dead and gone as the dinosaurs that fueled them, and the fuel itself we're addicted to (separate rant) .

While I do not disagree with the assessment of the US auto industry's failures, I'm afraid I cannot comment any further.

See, I one of those dumb, dumber that *feces*, cannot out-smart a fifth grader folks that bought a Chevy Tahoe in all of its large, gas guzzling girth.  I don't regret it either, so I guess that also makes me the ugly American.

Bagged, tagged, and labeled.

Back to my Animal Crackers and Sierra Mist.

Dumb consumers.  ;) [sm_devil]

well, instead of detroit forcing them into more fuel efficient cars,  expensive gas did.   same end result for the consumer, just time-shifted into a harder to take transition period

With all due respect, most corporations are in the business of selling their customers what they want. It is the very rare (non-monopoly anyway) company that can build a successful business model on telling consumers what they want isn't really what they should have.

definitely true.  just most corporations also aren't selling products that get us overly wasting a critical, ever-dwindling natural resource that's for us,  the equivalent of crack to tyrone biggums.

If the public ever listened to the government I'd agree - but I don't think it would have made much difference.  The only thing that would have would have been $5/gallon gas.  And the president that presided over that one would have been out of office next election.  Perhaps Nixon should have done it as his last act before stepping into the copter.  Or Reagan as he left - he wouldn't even have remembered  [sm_shock] (bad hobbit, bad  ;))
