Title: Hiring suspected illegals to do work for you.
Post by: Teed on May 23, 2008, 12:28:56 PM
I just had 10 yards of mulch delivered to my house today.  You know what I'm doing for the weekend.  Well my neighbor comes up to me and says "I hired some guys that were working w/ a landscaping company for four dollars an hour to weed and mulch my yard, why don't you get them to do it?"   Discussion goes on and he says they're probably illegal, but the cost was right.  I have to say, his yard looks fantastic.  His yard was done for less than $50 bucks.   [sm_shock]  Three guys X $4/hour for 4 hours.

I think I'm gonna do it.

Flame on!!

I'll delegate anything if the price is right.  Just think of it as you empowering them.

In general I'm lazy and apathetic.  Yet I understand the concept of opportunity cost.

A friend of mine saw a crew doing something similar and asked the head guy if he had a card (meaning business card).  The guy apparently thought he meant green card, because they all disappeared and never finished the job.

I hire an illegal immigrant to do hard yard labor from time to time.  Only he's a legal from the South Pacific via BYU so that's probably different.

And considering current Utah allowances, he's not *trolloping* himself for only 4 bucks.

I checked undecided, although I suspect I'd do it.

I have no real problem with 'illegals' - just depends upon the situation I guess.

Yet another reason 'conservative republican' does not fit me very well.  ::) ;)

I submit zeroing in on cheap labor which has strong disinclinations about reporting your substandard working conditions is muy conservativo republico.   ;)

Perhaps its somewhat schizophrenic - most conservatives want them 'other' folks kicked right out - with extreme prejudice.  Others want the cheap labor.  I just think we need to let more in legally - i.e., minimum wage or better, taxed, etc.

I'm with you Rick.  If it was a simple problem we'd have solved it already.

As an immigrant I understand wanting to improve your lot in life.  The American Dream is a reality for my family.

As a legal immigrant whose mother spent three years working through the channels I value the sanctity of law.

Seamus looking for work. Asks 12 dollars an hour.

(insert any ethnic name you want) says I'll do that same job for half of what Seamus wants. For some it's a fortune, for others it doesn't pay the mortgage on their little piece of the American dream.

Guess who gets hired. The tentacles reach farther than who'll do your yard cheap, my only hope is that they are all legal, speaking of dreaming.

You don't look Mexican.  [sm_scratch]

Very nice take on it.  I couldn't agree more.  I personally wish every that wants to live here, get to share on what we have.  Especially when it comes to poor or oppressive living conditions.

The thing is, they can't just do it.  That's not fair to me.  I want more money, but I don't rob a bank.  I don't skip paying taxes, because my family would be better off.  Etc., etc.

I guess like you said, it's not simple, but something to work on for sure.  Hopefully we get some tree huggin' hippie crap in The White House.  [sm_cartman]

Interesting you consider that might be the answer.  I'm guessing whoever wins will do *fudge* all to fix the problem.

Republicans hate minorities but love cheap labor.

Democrats love everyone but hate corporations.

Everyone loves the Latino voting bloc.

I think we need a Libertarian owner of a sprinkler installation company in the White House.

They are pretty much on every street corner down here. In fact most cities have a place that they can congregate at and you can drive up and say hop in.

My parents did that one day to clean out the weeds of the flower bed.

My brother is installing a new central A/C system in my house this weekend. Aside from buying him a new acetylene torch, I also bought him a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey. I'm pretty sure he's legal, but he works for cheap, so I guess that makes me undecided. Or something different.

Cool.  So, you get tired of that goofy Medieval de-humidifying distilling machine in your attic?

We figured since we got a satellite dish, we might as well join the rest of the modern world in home cooling technology too.

I didn't think the INS had a problem with Canadians??

On the plus side, I guess they mostly speak English, so negotiating down from $4 an hour is probably relatively easy, ehhh.

That's not a manscaping reference, is it?

'Cause I thought I had those two under contract.
