Title: i didn't witness the accident, but i did see most of the aftermath...

the driver was 70-80 and didn't seem to even be 'processing' the severity of what he had just done. he wanted to get in his car and drive away after the 1st police guy questioned him ....
just another example of how the us lags behind the rest of the 1st world in forcing old people into yearly driver review tests.

We have a really weird license plate numbering scheme here that makes it easy to spot the older drivers (most of whom have no business behind the wheel).  Essentially if the plate contains 3 numbers or less, watch out.

No mention of a geriatric *fudge*er behind the wheel.  I smell a liberal media conspiracy.

How important is eye sight and reaction time while driving anyway?

Is this true?

not exactly.... a bit of an exaggerated stretch (for emphasis on the point that here they don't do jack shiaite at all about it... )... but a lot of european countries are far more strict than here, for example

I think it should be true but I've seen a lot of geriatric drivers in the UK and Ireland.  I'm not sure what the legalities might be but they definitely let the old ones behind the wheel when perhaps they shouldn't be.

Kids are worse.  They just tend to kill themselves so it's alright.   :-\

Well, I'd guess more 85 year old males die in bed, on the couch, taking a shower and/or having a shat than their 16 year old counterparts.  I think we'd need to know how many of them are dead before impact vs. after.   ;)

Lies, damned lies, and statistics!!

of course the stats are manipulated... that's why its reported per X vehicle miles than per capita.  that said,   there are gonna be a lot more 85 year olds in 15-20 years than there are now .  [sm_shock]

According to Wikipedia, average life expectancies for US Americans are: 75.6 years for males and 80.8 years for females.

Perhaps that is how they should set the maximum driving age. We wouldn't want anybody to croak while behind the wheel.  :D

You're right and they should be tested yearly.  I absolutely agree.  But I think putting kids behind the wheel is something that needs a bit more attention.  It's not a Constitutional right so I'd have no problem granting the privilege based on a combination of acceptable school attendance, lack of a juvenile criminal record and specifically a clean driving record.

Before my job change I used to drive by a high school every day just before school started.  I'd see at least three wrecks a week.  Sometimes they looked as if someone didn't fare too well.  I agree kids don't tend to run people down in the 'geriatrics out of control' scenario - but they do drive crazy, they do crash and they do die and kill their friends.  [ use of stereotypes acknowledged but you get my point I hope ]

I've been preaching this for years.  I don't give a *feces* if hurts their feelings.  It's about competence.  Period.  16 y/o's have to demonstrate it, so should seniors.

You're 75 and you walk in take the written, eye, and driving test and pass with flying colors.....Good!  Tell the Hindu guy working the counter to go *fudge* himself.  But you still need to be tested.

Statistics pointed out earlier in this thread deem in necessary.
