Title: Spring project (w/pics)
Post by: Fuzzy on May 22, 2008, 10:05:44 PM
So....earlier this spring there was:

1. No job
2. Weather was teh sukk
3. Susan had an idea for a project

She wanted to do something in our entry. We had a bench that gathered all the crap that everyone threw on it as they came in the house. Now everyone has their own spot to put their stuff. So far, so good.

*photos courtesy of eldest female daughter.

From the beginning. Susan claims to be helping but I know it's just an excuse to stare at my tight little behind.

Of course now the room needs a new paint job.

My annual project is about half that.

Quit setting the bar so high.  My wife might stumble upon this place.

Was it that sunny inside your house that you needed a ballcap?

Nice work.  [sm_thumbsup2]

lol, must have been chilly, too.

anyways, fuzz, the construction looks very nice, but i'm calling the engineering into question a bit.

We keep our thermostat set lower than most. Doing our part for global warming.  ;)

I'm curious to your engineering question. For the record, stroh could hang 4 kegs from that bad boy.

Very nice.

If I don't paint the kitchen this summer I'm in deep *feces*.

After I build a set of MOI matched Wishons though I promise.   [sm_whistle]

I'm in the early stages (read: digging post holes and pouring a concrete slab) of building a patio cover and a pergola/trellis entryway into our backyard planting area. I could forward pics to your wife, if you'd like.

I guss I never pictured you as a pink hoodie guy.. but then again I never really pictured you... nice work by the way.

I am now inspired to send photos of our remodel.

well, lol, i probably overstepped my bounds to really say so since its been about 10 years since i solved any frames/trusses, and about 7-8 years since that class where we analyzed stress and sheering in commercial lumber/etc ... so excuse me if I don't bother trying to solve all those force balance , moment balance, etc equations off of {bad} recall. (and i'm certainly too lazy to try to do it in 3-d at this point)

and that said, i doubt you'd ever load this up to a point that it really matters.....

let me simply ask, structurally, why did you lay out your frame that way (triangles opposite oriented and anti-symmetric...does that actually do anything, or is it aesthetic)  , and why did you orient the bottom shelf diagonal support arms in a way they're more prone to buckle (guessing easy of assembly and materials availability)

I bolded the key statement. But it is a surprisingly sound structure.

[serious]  This was built by looking at a picture of virtually the identical shelf/coat rack unit in a Martha Stewart Living magazine. I *feces* you not. hence the triangular aesthetics. [/serious]

Please direct any engineering concerns her way.  ;) ;D

But the bottom shelf diagonal support is very standard bracket design for shelving, is it not? In fact the triangular pieces are just that - pre-made brackets. They'll support a lot of weight before buckling.

Triangles are pretty.

Triangles are pretty.

'Zactly.

One doesn't argue with Martha. Especially when One is female and wants a shelving unit just the like the picture in Martha's magazine.

lol, well i just thought youd get a buckle a lot faster with the load applied across the thin and weak grain direction rather than if you oriented the support arms along the thick/strong grain axis   .  maybe gleek will chime in on whether you have a zero force member in that layout

The hypotenuse members in the upper set of trusses are probably zero force members, but they still serve a purpose in Fuzzy's design. They can serve as "walls" if he wants to stack *feces* up inside the compartments.

[sm_devil]  . good to see my intuition was probably right about the zfm.  it's been way too long to actually do the math and find out lol

Just for *feces*s, I just put 100# on the top shelf between the second and third zfm's.

Nothing buckled. I feel pretty good about the design, especially considering it's just shelf/coat rack. [sm_devil]   And I think it looks good.  ;)

No photo essay, but here's the finished product. Please to ignore the weeds and debris that surround it, we haven't finished cleaning up the area yet.

No, that's the backyard. We have a very similar rock wall in the front yard too.

That looks almost like a torii.
Inspired by, but not an attempt to replicate. Hopefully that's how it comes off.

It definitely is more of a subtle influence rather than outright copy, but it's also cool to know that the style was intentional rather than an accident.  [sm_thumbsup2]

Ah, Bach.  If you would have just said one of those Japanese deals, I would have known right off.  ppffttt.  torii bull*feces*.  The only Torii with two I's I know used to play center field here.  Streaky hitter.  Great defense.  Pohlad was too cheap.....
