Title: Paging dyno

So what did you say to Tait that got you moderated? Enquiring (sic) minds and all that...

I'm not a master club designer, but I know a thing or two about marketing and PR. SMT's product may indeed be every bit as good as Tait thinks it is (I've never used any SMT clubs beyond the durometer wedges, and I didn't care at all for them), but denigrating competitors and distributors does nothing to improve his image, nor the image of his product.

He projects insecurity alternated with smug superiority, and that shows me he's either not confident enough in his product to let it speak for itself or that he honestly believes he's built a better mousetrap and anyone who doesn't use it or speak 100% positive about it is a fool. Either way, mud thrown is ground lost.

I have to agree wholeheartedly. He was the main reason I stopped posting in FGI. I believe my comment alluded to him posting his self-serving crap, while being protected and exalted by the powers that were. I never understood how someone with such a tremendous product had to stoop to throw his weight around so much. Not to mention the entire Nemesis scandal/bull*feces*. How he was so appalled that a larger than life version was allowed to enter this country, (and now what is the size of the clubhead). I remember how protective the boss of FGI was of Tait that any who maligned the product was taken to task.
Oh well, water over the dam, or under the bridge, (or wherever the hell water goes anyway).

Clive,
I know things have changed, but the bitter pill was swallowed, and I can't help but think it could happen again. Some of the mods over there are fine, but who knows how long they will stick around or be allowed to continue.

I was referring to the club, and the way the thread went on for days about how Tait was going to get to the bottom of the problem and make sure it wasn't allowed to persist.
Then whenever the difference in clubhead size came up, even by someone genuinely curious about the situation, that person was jumped on by several 'well-meaning sponsor protectors' ::). And then Mr Tait would go on about how he spent hours and days without sleep to make sure the integrity of his company and revered clubhead were upheld. It was enough to make one puke [sm_puke]
Sorry for the rant.

I think you've nailed his aura....that's pretty much what I get.

There was some other stuff but basically I called him out on his line of bull###t.  I also called him Judge Judy with a smirk.  It was really tame and not much of a personal attack but I don't blame the mod (RSV) for doing what he had to do.  Sorry. The Nemesis story is more interesting to me now.

More accurately, he started bitching about the "Jap" pilots, how they took forever to fly anywhere, and how they got in the way of his plane ... and they jettisoned him somewhere over the Atlantic.

Which is weird, since they were nowhere near the Atlantic.

Ummm. I think I might be more confused on the topic than I was before, but here's what I gleaned from that thread: Mike Tait is smug and there's no shortage of people willing to line up to fondle his crank and eat his *feces* and tell him it's chocolate pudding. Then again, I could be totally mistaken.  [sm_dontknow]

The only point I chased in that thread was that the Nemesis swelled from 370cc to 405cc when his foundry made new brass casts/molds/masters/whatever, and that the new 405cc head was advertised as USGA-legal without ever having been submitted to and approved by the USGA.

"We design all our heads to pass USGA standards" is great, but the fact that previous SMT heads FAILED to pass indicates that the best-laid plans of mice and Tait ...  :punchballs:

The whole fabricated story about the Nemesis changeover was a joke.  I remember measuring the head volumes of both then shafting up identical clubs.  If he's seeing the same spin and launch numbers, someone's feeding him *feces*.  I have a vague idea of the true story and it's a far cry from what he claimed...and certainly 100% more plausible

Title: Re: Paging dyno
Post by: dystopia on January 13, 2007, 12:51:29 AM

I've always wondered what the real story of the Nemesis was behind the scenes, but was never sure what really happened.  I do recall how it started, though.

The thread that cbae linked to is from 03/05/04, and the one I linked to is from 07/27/04.

But I believe the story begins on 11/19/03.  I remember it because I had been on FGI for about 5 months and had just bought my first component after reading all the great things about them.  My first choice was a Nemesis based on everything I had read and from drinking the FGI koolaid, and just after I bought it, the controversy erupted, so I had no clue if the head I had just bought was a gazoo nemesis or the 370cc one that everyone had raved about. (it turned out to be the 405cc version, but  I'm still not sure if it was the gazoo or just the larger, later model)

Here's what I remember about how it started.....the forum was angry that day, my friends, like an old man trying to return soup at a deli....

1) longdriv2 (now SMT) posts this thread called  SMT - " On New Heads " on 11/19/03
http://www.freegolfinfo.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=559456&mpage=1
It's a description of all the new heads for next season (Spectrum, O2, etc.)

2) On page 2 of that thread, a mysterious visitor names puttingfool (not PnF, the tool) shows up and posts something that has now been deleted.

However, someone later quotes it:
Quote

I have seen three drivers, two with Nemesis markings, and one with HP420 markings, all sitting side-by-side. The two Nemesis heads did not look the same, but one looked to be more the size and configuration of a 420. The only thing similar about the two Nemesis heads are the sole and the grooveless face...everything else on Nemesis #2 matched the 420 perfectly. Now, either this was caused by poor quality control where the heads were manufactured, or there was an attempt at deception. My question is this: Which reason is true?

And I do not take this lightly. In fact, I have known about this for quite some time, but was rather hoping that Mike, being the great guy that we all believed he was, would come clean about this on his own.

3. Several posts in that thread have since been deleted, but it's interesting to note the piling on happening with the newcomer.  This was back when everyone loved SMT.

4. Page 7 of the same thread has a remarkable post, in hindsight:
Quote
I realize that. But once I read the post stating that even if I took pictures, there was a chance that they could be altered, I decided that no amount of being right on this issue is going to matter. Nobody here is going to believe that Mike has done anything wrong no matter what level of evidence I provide. So, it is best to just let the matter drop. Besides, if the folks who received the incorrect heads are satisfied that they have a good club, what's the difference, right? I am just a little saddened about the whole issue, because I know what is truth here, and nobody else is willing to believe it, and the man everyone here trusts is telling a different story.

5. Somewhere on page 8, PuttingFool posts a link to pictures of the heads, because the tide starts to turn by the end of page 8, and opinions appear to change once they see the pics.  Many posts seem to have been deleted here.

6. The rest of the thread gets threadjacked by GODGIB jumping in.

7. I remember many threads and posts were deleted after that, but this one remains:
http://www.freegolfinfo.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=561968&mpage=1

Since things were getting deleted all over the place at that time, I was careful to save a link to the pictures that PuttingFool posted.  You can view them here:
http://fgi.250free.com/

In hindsight, we've all become accustomed to two Nemeses by now, but this was a huge deal at the time.

It's not brown, it's "Santorum".

One thing about Bryant is that he never shows his junk online.  I skewered him with the whole Mugen Kill Kill Kill thing but not a peep.  Mike on the other hand......there's lots of stories.  It's too bad....he needn't be defensive about his product because it's very good.  Most of it.

I remember the Mugen thing and your skewering. I thought you were a bit rough on him.
He was a pretty good sport about it. Didn't fire back.
Had that been a SMT thing, you would probably have had your balls handed to you.

Pardon?  Is this the part where I posture?

What i meant was that had you done the same thing to Tait as the Mugen thing, he would not have seen the humor, and with him still being a sponsor, at the time, you would have most likely, been taken to task.

Tait wouldn't have wrapped dyno's balls in 2000 meters of clear packing tape, though.

But he would have played 13 hours of Barry Manilow 'onto' them.

Anyone who has seen them knows your balls mean nothing.

It bugs me when I put a lot of thought into writing a post, just to see it disappear.

That's why I never bother to think now before spouting and pressing send.

I figured I'd do it like the other guys.

 ;)

My first ever PM to dystopia on Figs was when we both had posts deleted by the 'protect the source' brigade.

Even after everything was obvious to everyone but the Iraqi Minister of Information.  I think even he had a decent grasp of what was going on.

Unfortunately his stint as admin on Figs was all too brief.

February, I tell you.  The mighty plan will then be revealed.  I only speak truth.

8.  Figs are great for bowel movements.

are you sure about #8?

I searched for linkable evidence, which I found.

I hereby declare it to be true and it's on the internet, so it must be.

It wasn't immediately clear that this was the site I was looking for, the title of the page could have 'gone both ways' - Constipation Relief With Fruits.  However, It was safe to read on.

"Figs are high in fiber and can provide a gentle action on your colon when you have been constipated. This action can take about 24 hours before it takes place. Figs aid in digestion and provide a high level of fiber and minerals, They also provide a natural source of serotonin."

So there we have it.

Remember to get a good dose of Figs next time you need a dump bad.
