It's ugly on highdefdigest.com and avsforum.com.  Fanbois from around the color spectrum are ramping up the angst.  Hard core blu-bots are showing some serious lack of class.

Ah well, ride it out through CES and on into summer and see how things pan out.  Sooner or later someone will deliver a profile 2.0 stand-alone player for under $400 and I'll pick one up.  In the meantime, there are still Universal and Paramount flicks to pick up.  Hopefully cheap but I fear the days of BOGOs are over.

Sad days really.  Sony is teh *8==>*weed.  I hate the thought of them owning HDM.

:(

You know what is funny Uisce? I was going to post the same thing with the same exact title.

Either way, worst case Toshiba makes dual format players that still play HD-DVD discs.

Dual format Toshibas are the best that could happen.  Could push BD to profile 2.0 faster and at a lower price.  Fingers crossed.

"Why, oh why, didn't I take the blue pill?"

LOL.   ;D

I'm surprised Asker hasn't offered his opinion about this rather unsettling development.

well,  was away from internet all weekend (thursday noon to sunday noon),  and let me say reading this while not surprising i guess, certainly put a final touch on a *feces*ty overall weekend / etc.

meh.  DRM and anti-consumer companies win.  i'll be enjoying the hd-dvds i have for quite a while longer,  that doesn't bother me.  just hate to give in and support  the evil incarnate that is bluray in order to enjoy the movies  in hidef.    when there's a 1.1 or 2.0  combo player on the market  under $400 i'll buy in i guess
 [sm_disgust]

i think the really sickening side of the story is that it really says Warner thinks HDM has no real mass market future  before digital downloads can become reality.   they have about 500% more royalty rights on hd-dvd than on bluray (as a technology)

Since Sony owns the largest movie studio, it seems like HD DVD was fighting an uphill battle the entire way. It seems like the only way HD DVD could have won is through solidarity by all the other studios to either support both formats or go exclusively red. Any defection (even by Warner, which is only the 4th largest studio) would give blue a huge market share. I would guess Sony probably paid Warner or gave them a sweetheart deal to go exclusively blue.

with warner neutral and the ps3 effect (initial burst) wearing down things were finally heating up.  it's definitely a slow death for hd-dvd over hte next 12-18 months without an equivalent  knockout type move.

regarding bribe, of course, why would you ally with a vertically integrated competitor otherwise?   expect sony studio blurays selling $5 under all their competitors once the 'war' is officially over

i wonder if all the blowray cheerleaders realize yet that blowray BOGO sales will never happen again.

Paramount has an out in their deal with HD that allows them to release on Blue Ray, likely before the end of 2008.  Unfortunately, it appears to be a matter of time before it's "officially" over for HD.

What really sucks is Warner controls by far the largest amount of catalog titles and could have made it very difficult had they gone the other way.
