Title: Aeropress Coffee Press
Post by: dystopia on November 10, 2008, 11:07:09 PM
Anyone ever tried one of these?  It's supposed to make a killer cup of coffee.  Part french press, part drip, made by the Aerobee flying disc folks.

http://www.aerobie.com/Products/aeropress_story.htm

I decided to pick one up today and had to go to four stores before I found one because they were sold out.  Everyone I talked to raved about the coffee this thing produces.

Interesting. I haven't seen one of those. I use a french press and it's >>> drip.

I'll be waiting for a review.   :)

So dys, what's the "emission" like from that Aeropress Coffee Press?

Noticed no difference.

After two tries in this thing is proving trickier than I expected.  I thought it would be easy straight out of the box.

The first time I tried it, I accidentally used two filters that were stuck together.  I totally botched the pressing down and did it too quickly.  Turned out really weak.

2nd cup was stronger, but not as strong as I'd like.  I might be diluting it too much or need a finer grind.  Will report after tomorrow's attempt.

I'm hoping I can get the right technique down.  I like being able to make a single cup in a minute vs. using the honking coffee maker we have.  And cleanup is super quick.

This is probably the best explanation:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/kitchen/8e3a/
    * Place a filter on the bottom of the Aeropress
    * Place the Aeropress on top of your favorite coffee mug
    * Put a measured scoop of coffee into the brewing chamber
    * Pour hot water into the brewing chamber
    * Using the included stirrer, mix the coffee and water
    * Wait twenty seconds, and place the plunger on top of the brewing chamber
    * Push down gently on the plunger
    * When the plunger reaches the bottom, pop out the puck of coffee grounds into the garbage
    * Enjoy your perfect cup of coffee!

Did you remember to think about baseball?

Ok.  Thanks for the explanation.

I was confused when you said it was a press and a drip.  I thought it was more of a machine than what was shown in the picture.

Sounds good, I like really strong coffee, but making it one cup at a time does nothing for me.

It makes 1-4 cups at a time.

The AEROPRESS™ is an entirely new way to make coffee.

    * Water and grounds are mixed together for ten seconds.
    * Then gentle air pressure pushes the mix through a micro-filter in 20 seconds.
    * The total brewing time of only 30 seconds results in exceptionally smooth flavor.
    * Tasters ranging from professional cuppers and author Kenneth Davids, to coffee aficionados all praise the smooth, rich flavor.

Smoothest
Using the ideal water temperature and gentle air pressure brewing yields rich flavor with lower acidity and without bitterness.

Richest
Total immersion brewing results in uniform extraction of the ultimate in full coffee flavor. Other coffee makers drip hot water on bed of grounds, over extracting at the center and under extracting at the edge.

Purest
Micro filtered for grit free coffee – unlike other press-type coffee makers.

Fastest
One minute from start to enjoy. The actual press time takes only 20 seconds.

    * Makes 1 to 4 cups (1 or 2 mugs) of coffee or espresso
    * Made in U.S.A.
    * Replacement AeroPress filters available
    * Worldwide patents pending

I don't know how similar the filtering method is to a traditional french press, but my experience with them is that too fine a grind and you end up with gritty coffee. I suspect your answer either lies in using more grounds, or letting them brew longer before "pressing."
