Title: Favorite Style of Course
Post by: Uisce Beatha on January 23, 2007, 06:20:57 PM
I've played some great courses in all four categories.  I have to go with links though.  I truly believe that's the way God intended us to play the game we love.  It doesn't hurt that some of the links courses I've played are among the best regarded tracks in the world.

I voted links.. We have a few of them down this way, but then I wasn't sure how you'd describe a 'classic' course like, say, Royal Melbourne.  Not really 'parkland' or 'mountain'.

Just about everything in the 'sandbelt' here is in many ways similar to Royal Melbourne...

I agree. I have not played links in Scotland or UK I have played Pacific and Bandon Dunes. It was awesome.

I tend to enjoy the "links" style courses in MN as well.

I thought about that but couldn't come up with a term.  Maybe 'classic' should be added.  Of course, that could be an adjective in front of the other four.

Based on the bits I've seen on TV I'd say Royal Melbourne is links inspired on non-links land.   [sm_dontknow]

BTW, it's on my top five list of courses to play in my lifetime.   8)

Pacific Dunes is one of my two favorite courses.  The other is the European Club.  I've played a few others that are top 100 in the world but those two stand apart.

I'm playing Pebble Beach in July.  We'll see if that budges one of the other two.

If you ever get the chance... you owe it to yourself...

Although I guess I've been somewhat spoilt having been able to play it many many times...

Not a long course by any stretch of the imagination... but difficult all the same... ;D

Parkland treelined is the norm here in the PacNW so the links style courses tend to be lacking.

Tough call between mountain and links, I like both, but since my favorite courses locally are mountain courses, that's what I chose.

You forgot one style: "putt-putt".

Do I smell some bias?  ;)

Being the traditionalist that I am I chose Links, but one of my favorite courses in WA. is a combo, 9 holes desert, 9 holes Lakes, and it's mostly all in a desert setting.

I've never played an actual links, only cheap imitations. I do think linksland is the ideal site for golf, and links courses demand the most imagination and shot making.

That said, I've been lucky enough to play Pine Valley, and like Royal Melbourne it would be hard to call it parkland golf. Also like Royal Melbourne, it is arguably as good as any course on the planet.

we have a course thats  9 holes  treelined and 9 holes links-ish

its great fun

i like mountainy courses though,  with imposing dropoffs/uphills,  good use of hills to creat doglegs (instead of treelines)  etc.

Nice.  I'd love to play a course like that.

Topic:  All I have ever played is "Generic regular style" courses. :sad3:

Aske,

You might just run into me this summer at that course.  I've driven that far before to play less interesting courses.

I also like the vertical aspect of most PA courses.

That's a beautiful course Aske.  And I thought Utah rates were good.   :o

I've played The Tribute down here and it is a copy of famous links holes from Scottland courses. It is a blast to play. I do love those type of courses because it is more in line with my style of play. I tend to play a bump and run if I can.

I love links courses!!!  They don't care much for me though.  I think I just hit a great shot,,, get to my ball and  [sm_banghead] I've got a downhill stance, and sidehill, downhill lie because some freakin designer decided 2 or 3 moguls would look good right here.  Other than that I love em!  especially those 5ft deep pot bunkers from hell.

my preference:
Mountains  ;D
Desert  :D
Parklands  ;)
Links   :(

Mountains, desert, parklands very close in preference. But then what do I know?  [sm_devil]

Wow!!!  Tough question.  It's like asking, "What is your favorite copulation position?"

So I'd have to say I'd like to play a parkland links style desert mountain course.

I love a parkland course at 5:45 am and your first group out and birds are chirping and your all carrying. Here on Long Island you can play Bethpage Red at 5:15 am in the summer or the Black at 6:00am and it is a walkers dream.

I'd vote for parklands but those damn trees really get in my way. [sm_disgust]  ;D

I've never played a links-style course. My kids loves those that he's played. We'll be in Tempe next month on a college visit so maybe I can squeeze in a desert round.
