Title: Later, golfhos
Post by: Aske on June 09, 2008, 05:01:02 PM
cheers everyone.  nothing to do with you all....

I endured yet another epic failure in life/career and didn't get the job I wanted, but...more important..... vitally needed... (to add insult to injury, it's the only position I have ever been remotely qualified for... in fact it was the perfect match imho)....   with no alternatives in sight, no redeeming skills, and my current contract over at the end of the month....  I'll be spending the rest of my time tieing up my current loose ends and seeking out some (hopefully can find more than 1) minimum wage positions.  Since Sal and I certainly didn't make much $ to begin with before this, this move down will certainly mean cutting all frivolous costs and time wasting activities such as the intertubes and golf.   One last thing... parents, please advise your kids to take practical career paths instead of doing things they excel at but are useless-- I wish mine had. A decent paying, stable job you hate that puts roof over head and food in the stomach is far better than any unstable job you actually enjoy (particularly if you acquire no skills in the process) trust me....

sorry I didn't get to tee it up with or meet more of you.  maybe in a parallel universe.

Someone please cheer the Steelers and Penguins on for me.

Aske out.

Good Luck with it all.

Dude - I know you feel like you've specialized yourself into uselessness (and feel particularly crappy right now) - but you still have a bachelors degree in something more general, yes?  Time to just take what's available there until better comes along? Certainly something better than GED-equivalency work.  99% of the people in the world do not get the 'perfect' job out of school - they work up to it.  Don't be too proud to 'pay your dues'.

In any case - temporary poverty - that sucks  :sad3:

Good luck!

Man I am sorry. I wish the two of you luck.

And I agree with hobbit here, you should be able to find something better then drive through cashier.

Well, that blows.

Good luck with the altered job search.  And +1 to hobbit's thoughts on that.

well crap! That just sucks!

I wish you and Sal the best. I know something will come along, then you will be back on bothering me and telling me not to watch your sport teams play!

Best wishes and talk to you soon!

What are your bachelor's and master's degrees in?

I would suggest getting yourself a gubmint job--even if it's entry-level. Put in your 8.5 hours per day, and spend your evenings and weekend trying to find the solution to the world's energy crisis.

BTW, here's one (http://jobsearch.usajobs.gov/getjob.asp?JobID=72237238&AVSDM=2008%2D05%2D30+15%3A09%3A10&Logo=0&lid=18326&jbf571=5&jbf571=9&jbf571=16&jbf571=14&paygrademin=7&paygrademax=11&FedEmp=N&sort=rv&vw=d&brd=3876&ss=0&FedPub=Y&SUBMIT1.x=61&SUBMIT1.y=16) in Pittsburgh and it's not an entry-level job. Oh, and there are two billets for this position, so you double your chances.

Here's (http://jobsearch.usajobs.gov/getjob.asp?JobID=72620989&AVSDM=2008%2D06%2D09+00%3A03%3A01&Logo=0&lid=18326&jbf571=5&jbf571=9&jbf571=16&jbf571=14&paygrademin=7&paygrademax=11&FedEmp=N&sort=rv&vw=d&brd=3876&ss=0&FedPub=Y&SUBMIT1.x=61&SUBMIT1.y=16) another one that starts off at GS-09 with promotion potential to GS-12. Also two vacancies. All these openings in Pittsburgh come in pairs apparently.

All the best Aske, I hope you find something.

Sorry to hear that man.

Have you considered actuarial work?  Take a look at the society of actuaries website.  With your background in statistical models, probability, etc. the exams should be very doable.  With your current educational background you should get your foot in the door.  A company will pay for all the exams and stuff since actuaries are in great demand.  Essentially anyone that can handle the high level math involved is what is required.

send in your resume to all the insurance companies around, they are all in need of actuaries.  And just about every actuary becomes one while working for an insurance company in a position similar to mine.

And they make very good money too.  It is essentially the business world application of what you have learned.

Good luck my friend.   [sm_beertoast]

I refuse to believe a PhD in chemical engineering from one of the premier engineering schools is unemployable.  Particularly given the likelihood, though truly hard to know for sure on any intertube commmunity, that your first language is not arabic or an arabic derivative.

It's not like your degree is in cosmology or evolution or other such useless disciplines.

Overall, I agree with what Hamsom Proudfoot (http://chriswetherell.com/hobbit/) says above, don't be afraid to start in the sweatshops and work your way up.

When he ran the firm, my Daddy gave me such a first job when I graduated from college with my 2.00019 GPA and a Bachelors of Leisure Studies degree, as Executive VP for Research and Development.  Now when I think about it, it amazes me how I stuck with it: If I can say so myself, it was a humble beginning, with only a mid 6 figure salary, annual bonuses and stock options that were so embarrassingly low I rarely ventured into the men's lounge at the club for fear the topic might turn to the subject, plus only two secretaries and perhaps worst of all, a washroom I had to share with someone else in the executive suite.  If it weren't for the corner office with floor to ceiling windows on two sides, I very well could have gone someplace else and completely missed the boat to Successland.

But I learned my lessons of perseverance and developed a keen work ethic from the struggle, one that I intend to pass down.  For example, my own progeny won't get to sniff their trust funds until after their 17th birthdays.

good luck dude, things aren't as bad for you as they may seem with your education. most entry level corporate gigs want a degree in anything they really don't care what. they just want to know that you have the ability to take *feces* and can be trained.  ;)

GM's hiring.  [sm_devil]

With our dollar as strong as it is now, should emmigrate to OZ.

We have a pretty decent public health system, the weather's decent and the job market is preety robust particularly in your field.

The other bonus is that your Head of State is a Queen..

I'd also reckon you shouldn't be such a drama queen....

I'd really start to complain when the only job available to you is "the squeegee guy" at the local Adult Movie Theatre 8)

Are you just jealous that Aske is now free to pursue his life long desires while you are still stuck in your 7 to 8 going nowhere job.

Come to New Jersey, we love chemicals.

Seriously, between the pharmaceutical and chemical companies, there has to be something that would pay a helluva lot more than minimum wage.

Oh... :sad3:  Well, Aske, I wish you and Sal the best, and I'm hoping you'll find something much better than a few minimum wage jobs.  You do have talents and an obviously keen mind, and I'm sure there's a place out there that could really use you.  It sure would be nice if you and Sal could find a way to keep in touch with us, a quick update here and there.
