Title: Golfhos Ryder Cup
Post by: Clive on January 15, 2007, 11:51:22 AM
Do we have critical mass for such a thing?

I'd be happy to handle the task of crunching numbers for course handicaps, stroke allocations, and discreetly cheating to have my team win.

Being that I'm stupid as hell, I'd require further explanation of such a venture before pledging any sort of support.

Cool idea.  Do you mean GolfHos vs. GolfDopes?

Or something internal here?

If so, what would be the demarcation for teams?

East vs. West?
North vs. South?
Cast vs. forged?
Old vs. young?
Libs vs. ..um..ultra libs?

I think whatever we can do to create more friction and ill will between ourselves should be done as soon as possible.

I mean healthy competition.

Proper hate you guys.

I'm already feeling more ill will towards TFT, if that's of any benefit.

My arrival here wasn't enough?

I propose a complicated, Delay-inspired jerrymandering scheme to form teams.  Blader is likely the only person here with the talent and the interest in jerrymandering to pull it off, so we should get him signed up early and then watched closely.

Jerry Mandering is long since dead.

Tom Foolery killed him for moving his fence.

So there.

Arctic conditions here.

Whichever team I'm on, probably the next round I'll have is St. George over Presidents' Day.  I own that course (http://www.golfhos.com/forum/index.php/topic,285.msg2281.html#msg2281) though.  Lowest round in 2-3 years.  Y'all want me on your team.  I'll let you fight over me.

Does break mean more than or less than?

Sunny St. George.  Utah's Dixie.  If it's 40 degrees or better I'll be in short sleeves and (always optional) trousers.

*fudge* that.

I'll play with anybody...even you....so long as they are from the south or they are a southern sympathizer who lives in a border state..Missouri and Kentucky.

Maryland was also a border state, having clear southern sympathies, although it is not often recognized as one. The northern aggressors absconded Maryland before the first shot was ever fired, as their leaders in the District of Columbia rightly foresaw a need for an escape route.  But they would never be truly safe until arriving in Pennsylvania.

This isn't 'jerrymandering' in the slightest.  It is a policy that recognizes historical accuracy and the political contingencies of the day.

Hmm, that's interesting.  That's about what it's like here as well.

Don't know if I'll be able to partake in such a golf event.  But before I commit or decline, I would also like to know just what you had in mind.

Not really an event, if I understand the idea.  We split into groups, most likely 2, US, and non US with a coin toss to decide who has to take Clive.

You go out and play golf, and then turn in your score.(doesn't matter where, or when.  The brain wizards here ;the guys who are smart real good, and use words like jerrymandering, have a formula to equate the scores.)

We basically play an online match with our real world (all over the world) scores.

Okay, thanks for the explanation.  I didn't think it would be like a DS, but thought a certain month/day might be involved.  Would this be a 1 time thing or weekly/monthly?

Title: Re: Golfhos Ryder Cup

I'm guessing weekly, but monthly would be more "doable" for me.

I haven't studied the "where are you from" thread, but I'm not sure we have the diversity here to do US vs. non-US.  Plus, aren't the handicaps outside of the US calculated much more accurately, so there would be an advantage to non-USGA folks?

I'm not really a fan of captains picking teams either, that can get uncomfortable.  I'm guessing the divider might end up being a specific latitude or longitude, but this is Clive's gig, so it's his call.

Here's some other wacky team ideas:
- oem vs. component - whichever comprises the majority of your bag

- post-padders vs. non-padders - with the stakes being if the non-padders win, we remove post-counts and jackets from this site.  If the post-padders win, those on the winning team get a "multiplier', so that each of their posts will count 2x toward their post count.  [sm_shock]

- drunkards vs. teetotallers with the rule that the alcoholics have to play sober and the teetotallers have to play drunk.  [sm_devil]

**EDIT - fixed typos.  It's not wise to drink while making jokes about drunkards [sm_drinking]**

another idea could be people who (have ever) live(d) in pittsburgh vs. the rest

i think we have like 7 regulars here, at least... who could make the pgh team .

I think a latidutinal segregation would be unfair as those in the west would be saddled with me. My golf skills are less than poor. I have also never visited Pgh, which bodes well for that faction. Maybe we should ro sham beaux for who has to take spaceage.

Ditto.  I took some lessons, a couple years ago, and tried to really learn golf.  What I did was manage to screw up what little success I had ever had with the game.  Of late, I've been stuggling to just get back to the game.

Besides, wish, you should feel free to show us anything. [sm_naughty] ;D

USGA 17.1

I'm pretty sure.

I keep two.  One "official USGA" formula and another where I count inactive season rounds if the course warrants it.  I can confirm from home.

Sorry, must post a correction.   [sm_redface]

USGA index - 17.7

UBGA* index - 16.8

Take 'yer pick.

Interesting. The maximum handicap ladies can hold here is 36, men 27 (although senior citz are allowed to go out to 30).. I would assume that 40.4 would mean that on a par 72 course in order to play to your handicap you'd need to shoot 112 or better...

Depends on the course slope and some black magic.  According to the USGA you should beat your index about 25% of the time.  So if your course is sloped at 107 (113 is average by definition) the calculation is 40.4 * 107 / 113 = 38.25 for a course index of 38.  Assuming a par 72 course you should break 110 one out of four times.  You're saying that's not the case but the USGA doesn't consider a higher index so you're out of luck.   :(

Roughly true but depends on the difficulty of the course (see above).

It's hopelessly flawed.  Don't ask me to defend it.  :-[  ;)

Temporary holding pattern until the weather breaks a little for the Northern folks.  (I'm hoping they'll have a sun-break day and can rush out to enjoy the soft breath of Spring as they try to outrun the Ton Tons.)

Targeting late March, although I'm told golf in MN begins around Masters week.

Not sure.  He sucks big time. ;D

Last time we played I beat him by a few strokes and out drove him all day.  Not sure he could even muster the strength to get out on the course again after that beating.

I bet he is a high single digit or low double digit with a horendous short game. ::)

Assuming the teams are sufficiently large and with full realization that cheating sandbaggers are rampant on this board, I was loosely thinking we'd probably throw out the high and low net scores and either sum or average the remainder.

Very much so.  Courses here, just opened this week.  I'm probably still a good week out on getting in an actual round, but if someone (pr. Clive) wants to set a start date, and a deadline for the first round of scores to be posted, I'll roll with it. :)

Playin' tomorrow Clive off course index of 19 (USGA: 17.4 x 126 / 113 and/or WTF: 16.6 x 126 / 113).

Do with me what you will.

edit:  93 = 19.3 diff; 92 ESC = 18.4 diff.   Four penalties, three of them S&D. :sad3:

Played nine holes, today. Nothing was too bad, and nothing was really great. The wind was howling, which made any club selection iffy. My irons were pretty good, and the hybrids were working nicely.
Anyway, I shot 44, 7 bogeys, 1 double and 1 par. 17 putts, 3 jacked the last one for bogey. :sad3: [sm_disgust]
Course rating 69.8, slope 113.

Clive,

Since, it seems seems we're all up and running (save Mr. Dunk, and please chime in, if you're not yet thawed) can you draft something?

Teams.  Start date.  Format. Deadlines.  Postings.

Are we gonna run this as a running competition, or as a 1, or 2 time post, vs. cumulative?

I'm up for any way(oh, boy talk about serving up a softball.  My assless chaps are out being altered.)

Alright, my far-flung Ryder Cuppers, the time draws nigh for heads to be polished, balls washed ... and blood spilt.

My preliminary thought is to conduct the campaign as a series of nine-hole battles.  Assuming honest handicaps (oh, I crack myself up!), matches will be randomly drawn.  Could be singles or any mix used in the real Ryder Cup formats; probably just parallel the RC format for familiarity's sake.

I'm going to review the list of participants, try to trim them into two lists with roughly even handicap distributions, and pick the two biggest jackasses to be the respective team captains.  (The positions are merely titular, as the captains have no real responsibility save being blamed for the team's performance, particular players' lack of playing time, sandbagging, and so on.)

Personally, I can maybe play this Sunday, then my wife has me booked until 20MAY2007.

Clive can't leave us hanging on this forever.  Get your chit together Persnicketymon!!!   [sm_protest]

Shot a 43 today to combine with another 43 on the same course.  Index is down to 16.2 USGA.  Shooting for 14.0 or better by end of season.

Maybe I'll be scratch by the time this thing gets organized.  Glad I didn't volunteer to do it by the way.  Leaves more time for golf, trans-Siberian testicle examinations and my search for the perfect French onion soup.

Playing next Tuesday at TalonsCove (http://www.talonscove.com) (they don't have an apostrophe so who am I to say otherwise?) with my cousin, his dad in from Shannon and a friend.  Followed by Liverpool v. Chelsea over grub and Madame X Nitro Stout at Hoppers.  Will be a good time to be sure.

Anyway, course index is 16 if anyone ::) cares.

Congrats Bird of Pray.

Clive has a fancy calculator.  Trust me.  There's no way that dude could make it through the day without knowing the standard deviation of today's gas prices.

New clubs.  (Can't believe you already forgot about them. ::) )  Also remembered a tip or two that help me. Between those things (and getting out on the course more, hopefully), I might be down in the 130's by the end of the year.

High 80s I guess.  It doesn't really lend itself to figuring out an average as only 10 of 20 rounds count and then you've got ratings and slopes to work out.  Most of the courses I play have slopes in the 125 range.  My home course is 71.6/131.

My average score over rounds that count toward my index is currently 91 on the nose.

I shot a 44 last Sunday, If we've started already.

[Edit] 44. The Ponds.  White course.  White Tees.  33.9/125.  Oh, and it was really windy that day.  Don't forget to add the wind.  Some rain too.  Not a lot, but some rain.  Mostly the wind.  Make sure you add in the wind.
