Title: Questions about wireless n vs wireless g Post by: geo1 on June 24, 2008, 10:18:27 AM Comcast is my isp provider. The cable modem is connected to wireless g router and I have 2 puters. Is there any advantage to going to n wireless. I don't understand it. Seems to me that Comcast can not provide the speed that n can support and probably can't provide the speed that g supports. The wireless router is upstairs in the den and the 2 puters are down here in daylight basement.
Is there an advantage for me to go with the n wireless in terms of speed of upload and download? I know that both puters would have to have n capability to take advantage of the "faster" speed. Of course, Comcast is offering for "just $10.00 a month more" 16 Mbps speed. Title: Re: Questions about wireless n vs wireless g Post by: spacey on June 24, 2008, 10:27:05 AM I'm also using Comcast and I noticed little enough difference (in reality probably no difference) going from b to g that I can't possibly believe upgrading to n is going to do much for your speed. My understanding, similar to yours, is that at the datastream you're receiving from Comcast is much slower than n (or g for that matter) is capable of handling. I don't know how the additional 16 Mbps might affect that equation.

Hmm, no skills with tools here. So, laying cable across the den, thru the family room, across the hall (wood floor), down the stairs, turn left and down the newly carpeted basement (about 50 ft) results probably better speed - Wireless connection results - Stayin Alive, Stayin Alive!!!!! Title: Re: Questions about wireless n vs wireless g Post by: Aske on June 24, 2008, 11:40:17 AM while commiecast can't provide a product that meets the speed capabilities that N vs. G may offer, you might consider that N offers potentially 2x the range (200 ft vs 100 ft) that G does. of course if one assumes a free open space between source/sink then strength should go off as a function of r^-2. this would imply (ideally) that at 50 feet the signal strength should be significantly higher for a device rated to 200 feet vs one rated to 100 feet.
