Title: Rules of Golf Past.
Post by: Salamander on July 14, 2011, 01:01:15 PM
So, I've been interested in Regency reenactment lately, and have been looking into how golf was like in that era, especially for women. Apparently, the first recorded ladies tournament happened at Musselburgh, Scotland, in 1810 according to Wikipedia. Encouraged by that, I've been reading rules and regulations from various clubs from the 1780s to the 1810s, and came upon the following thing of awesome:

RULES TO BE OBSERVED BY THE GLASGOW GOLF CLUB, 1810: 17. When a match is made there shall be a forfeit of a bottle of rum each if it is not played.

Clearly, they had their priorities right.

Oh how fun! I'm also going to guess that rum was pretty spendy in those days since it had to be imported.

There is a company out there that makes reproduction hickory shafted clubs, and a tournament every year.
