Well, I'm getting showered with emails from regular FGIers, asking about FGI being gone and the domain absconded with.

I still get the DirectNIC page for all my FGI links and typing it in directly.  ???

No joy.

To the extent that getting FGI to load on one's monitor can be classed as "joy", that is.

Torpedo, was that a copy-n-paste from the location bar?  Didn't work for me, either.

Title: Re: FGI--- OOOPS!!
Post by: Uisce Beatha on January 08, 2007, 07:29:31 AM
Domain expired yesterday.  Depending on the TTL (time to live) settings the host information may be cached about the internet for any amount of time.  It's usually 24 hours though.  Those of you who can see the site are accessing cached DNS values and those of you who cannot are trying to hit it using current DNS values.

The registrar is DirectNIC.  We don't use them so I don't know their policies but if they're conforming with ICANN they'll hold the domain for some period of time (usually 30 days) and FGI can get it back for $100 or so.  This allows bozos to keep their valuable domains out of the hands of squatters.  I don't know the legalities of all of this.  I *think* registrars are required to conform but I wouldn't be the farm on that.

Seems there might be way too many Free Ganja Interludes over at Justin's digs these days.   [sm_smoking]

oh,  and clear your DNS cache

dos shell
ipconfig /flushdns

Won't help those who can't see it and might break it for those who can.

If someone who can see it can resolve the IP from the cached values the site should be available under a http://100.101.102.103 URL.  But unless the links are relative throughout the site it won't get you anywhere.

This ship is sinking and won't pop back to the surface until someone at FGI contacts the registrar and works through the process.

exactly.  if you can still see it, you shouldnt* !!  you're lucky your machine isn't 'up to date'  :D

the fix to view should be the server ip address

like you pasted below.   if anyone still want to view the site for whatever reason, they can post that into their hosts file

But the links within FGI aren't indexed by IP address.  At least, they don't work for me -- clicking on anything just gets me that DirectNIC page.

They're called absolute HREFs.  For example, instead of sending a link to "/forms/clubhouse.html" they're sending them to "http://freegolfinfo.com/forums/clubhouse.html".  The former would work on an IP URL but the latter always wants to go back to the hostname - which of course is unavailable to most.

Aske's hosts file trick should make it work for those in dire need of FGI today.

EAGLE/Torpedo, what OS are you running?

CW, while this is a relevant question it also might not be the reason they can see the site.

Most DNS servers around the internet act in a caching capacity.  The servers which are authoritative for a domain hold the actual data and they serve it to other DNS servers which ask for it.  There's an attribute associated with each host/record which tells the client server how long it should cache those values.

So in the FGI scenario it's possible that the Minnesota twins' ISP asked for the data just before the root servers stopped pointing to FGI's nameservers.  If the TTL is 24 hours the ISP would serve up the correct address for that amount of time.  Once the deadline is reached those servers would attempt to refresh the cached records.  This time, the root servers would direct the request to NS0.EXPIREDDOMAINSERVICES.COM and NS2.EXPIREDDOMAINSERVICES.COM and the DirectNIC page would be displayed.

Hope this helps.

Gawd, you're being serious.  How am I supposed to cop on to that?  [sm_cartman]

I don't know how your connection is configured but here's one way it could work, not work and then work again.  If you are using more than one nameserver it could be that one/some are using cached, valid values for freegolfinfo.com and the other(s) resolve using the expireddomainservices.com values.  Depending on how your machine is resolving DNS and which nameserver it is hitting you'd get different results.

The internet is rife with misconfigured DNS which is passed along to your ISP's nameservers and your personal machine.  Plug in your ISP's domain name here (http://www.dnsstuff.com/) and see if you get any red test results.  For that matter, when freegolfinfo.com comes back up do a test on it.  Last time I checked it had a half-dozen failures.  I passed the info along but...  well, you know how that sort of exercise typically turns out.

I've even seen bad data at the root servers.  That's a bugger to figure out and even more trouble to get fixed.  I'm certain that's not the problem today but it does happen.

On top of that I know jack squat about Windows DNS implementation other than I'll guess it doesn't use BIND/named like every other modern operating system.  There could be various local machine circumstances that are getting you, EAGLE and Torpedo access.

Trust me though, whatever is doing it for you involves caching.  At the time of my posts freegolfinfo.com was expired and, in a world without DNS caches, completely unresolvable.  Unless you are using the nameservers at Justin's ISP directly the root servers would point you to the dead end.  Guaranteed.

Still down for me. I'm afeared I might miss DutchB's latest thread on Islam. I don't know if I can sleep tonight if I'm uncertain about whether he still hates Muslims.

Except to see FGI revived before you find a round towel in your mailbox.  DirectNIC says any time now.

I finally got my dns refreshed and encountered the error just now.

I tweaked my etc/hosts file to get around it, but I bet there are a lot of annoyed people today.

I'm betting the hate will still be there.  Sleep tight.

Delete cookies or anything?  I don't now how to do any cache stuff.

Got it back. Whew, DutchB still hates Islam and pRickB_ is still a *8==>*head. I was worried that everything was going to go all topsy turvy.

Dirty boy.

For those unfamiliar, this is how to do it:

Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and look for a file called "hosts".  Change the filename to something like "hosts.old" and restart.  IIRC, this file stores the dns info for websites and sometimes does not get updated with new dns info.

I have 3 homepages in FX.  But in IE, I only have this (http://www.this-page-intentionally-left-blank.org/) one.  Why is it my homepage?

Because for some reason you just love that site. lol :D

Well, I wouldn't say I love that site.  But I did find it interesting that someone thought of having a blank page on teh internets.
