Truthers are people who are struggling with the concept that a loose organization of highly motivated people using stone age weaponry were able to execute the most horrific attack on US soil in 140 years without the aid of a foreign superpower or anything more technologically advanced than a Dell laptop and disposable cell phone. Their reaction is to concoct an elaborate, terrifying conspiracy as a way of to avoid dealing with an even more terrifying but much less elaborate reality.
