Title: Another Ask Aske thread : )
Post by: TFT on December 26, 2006, 01:39:26 PM

After our convo the other day in chat, what's the catch with this rig......

http://cgi.ebay.com/X6800-EXTREME-Core-2-Duo-8800GTX-2GB-320GB-HDD-PC_W0QQitemZ190055809266QQihZ009QQcategoryZ140076QQcmdZViewItem

I would prefer the 680i mobo.

I've asked him what wattage the ps is, waiting for reply.

I can't get those parts for that price, add shipping and/or tax and it's dead in the water.

Am I missing something?

looks like someone that runs a small build business.   probably either works for a company  or gets enough business to qualify for wholesale buying.

not guaranteeing anything  ;)

but looks pretty legit and good feedback

who knows.  you're braver than I am
 ;D

Yeah, I checked his feedback and other auctions, I've seen him around before.

Also it's just one state up so I could call for it if I really had to.

I've asked him some questions, let's see after that.

Nooooooooooooooooo.  Remember we stayed in Gayville, Glasgow.  Nobody with any real buying power would do that  :D ;)

How much would that comp cost in jockland?

The price this guy is selling it for is the best on eBay (with a track record).

Similar systems get bidded up towards 3k regularly, the BIN price that hasn't been snapped up is my confusion.

And the chess board, too, for that matter.

I've been back and forth with the seller over the last couple of days.

I need a bigger power supply (850 watts or so) than the one it's listed with so I can run 2 of those 8800gtx graphics cards in SLI when stuff starts to catch up.

No problem, another 170 bucks....

However, problem, the upgraded ps will not fit in that case, needs a more expensive one.....

Mobo upgrade is 129 bucks, plus an operating system and shipping....

I'm still looking.

I want to buy this week so the new 'spreadsheet computer' can go in this tax year.

 ;)

Time is short though.

He was waiting for you to ask first. ;)

Nah, I said I was still looking.

Have my eye on another one that ends shortly, which is actually better, but no BIN price.  I contacted him about it and he said he would let me have it for $3300.......

If I don't buy this tax year I'm waiting until feb/march, new stuff coming from ATI and AMD, maybe even some Intel, which will drop the price of the stuff out now.

I always get this jump now/regret later or wait/spend even more thing going on new PCs.

As it happens I've signed up for a distributor thingy from a warehouse today.

So if they do or can get hold of components at wholesale I'm thinking of making my own again.

Might even start selling them, if I get really bored.  Depends on what their prices are and the range of product.

I made the decision to make my own.

I just bought an x6800 Extreme.

Now I just need a case, erm, mobo, erm, HDs, erm, Opticals, erm, RAM, erm, PSU, cooling stuff, erm, graphics card....

Holy crap, what have I done?

 :P

if you decide you regret this decision, feel free to send the card to me

oh, btw.  wrt all these 'spreadsheets'  are you ever concerned about security with them and the whole  copy protection rootkit things ?

I bought a chip, the card will be along later :)

I'm not overly worried about that particular element of spreadsheet protection.

Since they are all blank, erm, for now, I mean.   ;)

Clearly though, it is a necessity that I be able to check websites and stuff and a speedy computer is required for that task....

Actual work computers don't get to have fun stuff installed on them.

It's obviously a pressing concern and so Firewalls etc are put in.

At the end of the day, we operate LLCs, with carefully managed assets so the personal risk is lowered.

It doesn't absolve the responsibility to everyone else though, so we are careful, or as careful as we can be when we have to access the internet in the normal course of business.

The work machines include Zone Alarm Pro which alerts when anything is trying to send out, obviously they aren't always infallible.

There are other things that we do to be as confidential as we can, that wouldn't be wise for me to post about online.

So, yes, worried, taking precautions, also yes.
