Title: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: Uisce Beatha on October 20, 2007, 11:14:58 AM Don't ask.
I'll be bugging you Windows guys I'm sure as I go through this. First impressions. Brand new out of the box and setup is at least 20 minutes long. That's lame. Finally get through that and my desktop appears. However, there's a notification that tells me I have 'serious security problems'. LOL. The ethernet port is virgin and the wireless adaptor has never been enabled. But I do have a nice little photo of a whale's tale so that's nice. Oh... it just switched to a gazelle. Yay!! i recommend you see if you can get a free trial of kaspersky to install on there Title: Re: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: Uisce Beatha on October 20, 2007, 11:29:14 AM Yeah, I probably should do something like that. However, all this is going to be used for is IE CSS testing on sites I own. No email. No other browsing. NAT'd and unreachable.
If it gets corrupted I'll just reinstall the OS. For me, the first thing I do is turn off double click. Then I can go on to set up the rest of my preferences and etc. Title: Re: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: Uisce Beatha on October 20, 2007, 12:14:11 PM Have fun! :D For me, the first thing I do is turn off double click. I turned it on, connected to my wireless network and started (repeatedly via F5) viewing a single page that's guaranteed safe. Not so much tweak. More like 2weak. Wireless setup was a breeze. Almost Mac-like in its simplicity. I've setup network connections on Windows boxes before and have usually ended up scratching my head - especially when those tabs in the control panels keep switching positions. I don't know whose bright idea that was but they clearly failed Ergonomics 101. So far, the Vista approach to things like that seems much improved. Title: Re: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: Aske on October 20, 2007, 05:07:57 PM is your laptop beefed up enough to run 'aero' ?

[sm_disgust] Quote A noticeably new element of the Aero experience is the translucent effect of Aero Glass, featuring dynamic reflections and smooth animations. The glass windows create an open, lightweight environment―and more importantly, help you to better focus on your content, rather than on the surrounding interface. Two exciting new Aero features, Windows Flip and Windows Flip 3D, provide a new way to confidently manage the windows on your desktop, so you can see them in a new visually striking, yet convenient way. Beyond the new graphics and visual polish, the Windows Aero desktop experience performs as elegantly and professionally as it looks, with smoother window handling, increased graphics stability, and glitch-free visuals. All of which give you a simple, comfortable, and high-quality experience. No, but I have a low-end MacBook that fills the niche. ;) Title: Re: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: Uisce Beatha on October 20, 2007, 05:13:58 PM I choo choo choose cat food. Manual is one of the pluses to windows. More options = better. Seriously. Title: Re: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: stroh on October 20, 2007, 05:23:38 PM Madolyn just combed my eyebrows. Needed it.
So, I'm good. Carry on. Title: Re: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: E-A-G-L-E! on October 20, 2007, 05:27:37 PM How's firefox workin' for you, stroh?
So you haven't crashed a second time, Uisce? That's progress. :D Seriously, everything setting up okay, now? Title: Re: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: stroh on October 20, 2007, 05:30:08 PM How's firefox workin' for you, stroh? Once you get used to the fish scales, it ain't so bad. That's progress. :D Seriously, everything setting up okay, now? Yeah, I think it's good. The more I think about it I believe the first "crash" was Vista rebooting itself for reasons known only to itself. I come from the Mac world where reboots I don't initiate are bad. Perhaps my expectations are too high. ;) Title: Re: HP laptop & Vista - reluctantly Post by: E-A-G-L-E! on October 20, 2007, 05:56:38 PM How's firefox workin' for you, stroh? Perhaps my expectations are too high. ;) Haha. :D Could have been. Maybe it didn't appreciate your abuse of the f5 key. ;) Self-reboots typically don't happen on windows either. Unless, of course, you're already infected with a virus.... Or I suppose some important updates were downloaded and needed to reboot, but even then you should get a little notice. Like 10 seconds or so. Or maybe you're expectations were a tad too high. ;) |
