Title: Allen A Viking!
Post by: Torpedo on April 22, 2008, 08:48:02 PM
http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d807eb389&template=with-video&confirm=true

Vikes now have the best defensive line in the NFL boasting ProBowler DE Jared Allen, ProBowler DT Pat Williams, AllPro DT Kevin Williams, DE James/Udeze with speed rushers Robison & Edwards to rotate in and keep each other fresh! 8)

Only ended up costing our (17th overall) and both of our third-round picks (73rd and 82nd) for one of the top young (some consider to be the top DE) DEs in the league. 8)

Add him to the list of players the Vikes have gotten this off-season:

Jared Allen
Bernard Berrian
Madieu Williams
Thomas Tapeh
Michael Boulware
Maurice Hicks
Gus Frerotte

Smaller depth upgrading signings:

Benny Sapp
Kenderick Allen
Dallas Sartz
Ellis Wyms
Derrick Pope

Vikes want to win now, and are doing everything to win now! 19-0 here we come! Skol Vikings! ;D

very bad trade $.02
he's about to be due a BIG BIG contract extension -- you might not even be able to keep him more than 2-3 years.   while he makes your DL better,  you definitely could have used  3 players to better address your needs than what he adds with just himself.

You're letting Torp get to you.  [sm_devil]

Sorry, this is a good deal. Anybody would trade their #1 and #3 (the other #3 was ours from Denver I believe) for a proven DE pro bowler. They are too hard to find. And this dude is in his prime - 26 years old.

Contract is done (how many years ??). Part of the sign and trade. Zygi WILL spend money, at least he has show that. This makes a pretty decent defense really damn good.

sorry, too busy doing a lot of other stuff.  torpie didn't mention anything about it including a long term deal.    :sad3:   if they really lock him up for at least 4-5 years it IS a good deal. (unless he kills someone on his next DUI and ends up in jail)

The deal will be the decider for me. If it is only 2 years then meh.....but if they get him for longer I like it.

No guarantees a 17th in the first round will produce like this guy. And 3rd rounders who knows. Even if 2 of 3 of those picks panned out I still make this deal. A pass rushing DE is something the Vikings have needed for years.

That is the biggest question mark in this whole thing. One more strike and he is out one year. Zygi may have contractual language to avoid paying him but we would lose 3 picks and this dude for a season.  [sm_shock]

6 years  $74M  with $31M guaranteed  [sm_shock]

1st and both 3rds this year.

Let's just say 'ol Zygi won't be tolerating another 8-8 year out of Chili with this deal and this money he just laid out.

I posted the thread within 10 minutes of it happening. Sites hadn't even listed the details yet, just that we had traded for him. 8)

Allen is a stud.  Your DL is scary now.  Aaron Rogers is very very afraid.

Maybe not if he makes it to September.

Quote
One league source told SI.com on Wednesday that Allen's two strikes in the program get wiped off the books if he stays incident free through September, at which time his most recent DUI will be two years old. He would then be out from under the threat of a year-long league suspension if he incurred another DUI after September, the source said. But that scenario could not be confirmed by an NFL spokesman Wednesday, leaving it uncertain whether Allen is a high risk for a career-interrupting suspension. Perhaps it will turn out that the Vikings are not taking quite the gamble on Allen that some might assume.

I've actually heard that to be true form several sources.  Not sure why the NFL will not comment on it.
