Title: Saddest Song Ever
Post by: dystopia on January 06, 2009, 06:36:42 PM
For the past few weeks, I've been scouring the web to find the  :airquotes: Saddest Songs Ever :airquotes: in an effort to come up with a Mopey playlist.
:rain:

To celebrate our new Seeqpod feature, do you have any good suggestions?
(I realize this is very subjective)

Here's an obvious one to start:

If we're posting songs about death and *feces*, how about nuclear annihilation?

I've listened to versions of this by Rufus Wainwright, John Cale, Leonard Cohen, Allison Crowe, and Kathryn Williams, and I like the Jeff Buckley one the best.

whoops, the seeqpod tag just takes the playlist ID, not the URL.  I'll fix it so it accepts either one tomorrow.

OK, I just made a change so you should now be able to post just a youtube video or seeqpod song without getting the "message empty" error.

Martha--Tom Waits

falls well on the pathetic side of sad

More Tom Waits--Emotional Weather Report

Falls more onto the playfully melancholy side of sad, but still very, very, very sad

"How Do You Get That Lonely"

It was just another story printed on the second page
Underneath the Tiger's football score
It said he was only eighteen, a boy about my age
They found him face down on his bedroom floor

There'll be services on Friday at the Lawrence Funeral Home
Then out on Mooresville highway, they'll lay him 'neath a stone...

How do you get that lonely, how do you hurt that bad
To make you make the call, that havin' no life at all
Is better than the life that you had
How do you feel so empty, you want to let it all go
How do you get that lonely... and nobody knows

Did his girlfriend break up with him, did he buy or steal that gun?
Did he lose a fight with drugs or alcohol?
Did his Mom and Daddy forget to say I love you son?
Did no one see the writing on the wall?

I'm not blamin' anybody, we all do the best we can
I know hindsight's 20/20, but I still don't understand...

How do you get that lonely, how do you hurt that bad
To make you make the call, that havin' no life at all
Is better than the life that you had
How do you feel so empty, you want to let it all go
How do you get that lonely... and nobody knows

It was just another story printed on the second page
Underneath the Tiger's football score...

I will say this, I am not listening to any of these songs.

So on that note:

Now that I know how to work this thing.

Too tired to figure out a new program.

Considering the circumstances under which the song was written, this just may be the saddest song evar.

Half as lonesome as the sound

For reasons I can't go in to, this song still makes me well up.

It's a human sign
When things go wrong
When the scent of her lingers
And temptation's strong

Into the boundary
Of each married man
Sweet deceit comes calling
And negativity lands

Cold cold heart
Hard done by you
Some things look better baby
Just passing through

And it's no sacrifice
Just a simple word
It's two hearts living
In two separate worlds
But it's no sacrifice
No sacrifice
It's no sacrifice at all

Mutual misunderstanding
After the fact
Sensitivity builds a prison
In the final act

We lose direction
No stone unturned
No tears to damn you
When jealousy burns
