Title: Ace?
Post by: Uisce Beatha on October 31, 2007, 04:06:32 PM
with stories like these,  it proves either:

the world is more full of liars than initially thought
or
the hole in one odds statistics are too antequated.

considering even lowly ol me has a pitch and putt par3 course   ace...

Makes me wonder.  Given our small, statistically irrelevant sample let's see how it fleshes out.

I have one.  Valley View #7 playing at 185 yards using my 5-iron.  Two witnesses, neither of whom I knew 90 minutes earlier.

The big LOL about it is I've never scored another eagle.   :P

BTW, my cousin has two on regulation courses.  I witnessed both of them.  He's the person I golf with more than anyone else.  I'm not sure if anyone else I know personally has one.

Been close, but I have never even seen an ace outside of television.
Edit:
Pisses me off, but my wife who has been golfing ~3 years, has a hole in one, and she is quick to point this out on the course.  Typical conversation goes something like this:

Wife: (rhetorical question) Why am I slicing everything?
Me: You're coming over the top and swinging too hard.
Wife: No I'm Not
Me:  Yes you are.
Wife:  No, I AM NOT.
Me:  Um, YES YOU ARE.
Wife: Um, how many holes in one do you have?
Me: *fudge* Off

I have one.

100 yards at a par 30 nine hole course that doesn't exist anymore (Cedar Hills).

Also, one eagle on a par 4 from 95 yards and one on a par 5 from 90 yards on regulation courses.

I also have 2 eagles of the "on in two and putting" variety on par 5's that I can remember.

None for me.  The closest I've ever come was on a 100 yd par 3 on an executive course.  The ball was tracking toward the hole the entire time, but stopped short 3 inches. :sad3:

No eagles, although have had some makable putts on some par 5s.

I haven't holed out anything over 40 yards.   :sad3:

No. I've landed them in the cup twice and had them bounce out, and I've lipped out three or four as well. So far none have fallen.

[sm_poke]

And you've seen me.  The "is it luck or skill?" question is a different poll.   ;)

I've come close several times (as long as close is within 50 feet)

My grandpa had an ace at Country View Par 3.  I played the course once.  Beautiful hole.  Sadly, it's no longer there.

No ace for me yet.  I have holed out from 155 yards for a 2 on a par 4 though.

No ace for me yet.  I have holed out from 155 yards for a 2 on a par 4 though.

That's really the same thing as far as difficulty is concerned.  Changes from 4 to 14 opportunities per round though.

I assume either aske or fuzzy haven't voted yet as the par-3 number is still at one.  Interesting that we're at 20-30% depending on how you look at it.  Golf Digest figures the odds of an amateur getting an ace is one in 12750.  Not too sure if that means in his lifetime or every time he tees up on a par-3.  Either way, it seems high to me.  That's a lot of par-3s.

Part of the problem is, I think, that the odds are calculated to include all the once-per-year, day after Thanksgiving players.  I wonder what they are if they counted only players who get at least ten rounds under their belt every season.

Thanks I was equally happy as if I got an ace.  I saw it land, take a bounce and back up a couple feet into the cup.  It was awesome.  Just haven't been able to get it done on an actual par 3 though I've been close.

I agree the odds seem kind of high but I'm sure it depends on the person.  It seems those older straight hitters get them a lot probably because they hit a lot of shots on line.  Whereas I'm all or nothing spraying shots all over.

I forgot that I did have one on a winter green where they cut two holes and rotate the flag position in order to spread the wear and tear. I hit it in the hole that didn't have the flag.

I've never even seen one.  I did have an eagle on a par 4 though.  Popped it in from about 130 yards.

My father had one.  Since the hole was over water, he played the crappiest ball in his bag.  So for years he had this old beat up thing in a hole in one trophy.

I've had none. Seen two from the group behind us. Also saw an Albatross from my opponent. Damn it, I birdied the hole and still lost two strokes. >:( [sm_banghead]

Had (a legit) one in '89 and never witnessed another until a few weeks ago during our club championship.

The latter was sort of interesting.

Guy in my group steps up and put one all over the stick, from about 190 away, but I could've sworn I saw his ball come to rest on the green.  Then I step up and hit a beautiful work of art, even better looking than his, absolutely all over the stick, but then I lose sight of my ball after it lands on the green.

When we get to the green, sure enough, we only see one ball sitting on it--(the other two guys in our group missed the green), in the shadows, about 10 feet behind the hole.  I'm sure its the guy I'm playing with--who actually is now walking to the front of the green to see if its in the rough--- and therefore mine must be the missing ball, most likely in the hole.

Sure enough...someone must of switched our balls on the tee box, because his was in the hole.

None for me yet.  Hit the stick twice and lipped one out, but nothing that has dropped.

I have stuck a few in from the fairway for an eagle on a par 4 though.
